Bathroom Blahs! Need an Elegant Escape

last modified: 12 years ago
We just moved into this house. Need help in selecting new paint color, lighting fixture, rug(s), window treatment ideas & wall decor. It's a blank slate!! I'd like to work with existing counters, cabinets & tub/shower - what can we do to make this elegant without major renovation? Counters remind me of sand at the beach - need ideas to play upon that - but when I try it starts looking beachy knick knacky. Open to your ideas! Not afraid of color. Bye bye bathroom blahs!

Silvermist looks good. Pretty, calming colour. Try it out first though.

Klynn, oh how I would love to see you use this colour somewhere....like the bathroom?

My vote was for Sea Salt until I saw the bathroom that carolins posted. Look how pretty!
Maybe in another bath, a little yellowier than I was wanting for master bath. Silver Mist looks a little bluer than I thought - Sea salt is a bit grayer - these are Sea Salt pics - might work in the mater bath?
I like the one Carolins posted too! Decisions decisions!
Bsellers - We may be able to use Roycroft Vellum paint in another bath :)
Sea Salt for me....like the gray tone with your room.
klynn, since this is the master bath, what are the colours in your bedroom? It's always nice if adjoining rooms kind of flow into each other. Not meaning that they both have the same colour on the walls, but, for example, maybe you have bedding that you can pick a colour from for the bathroom?
And if you want to go greener, you could look at something like SW 6176, Liveable Green (towards the sage side of green) or SW 6470, Waterscape, a fresher bleuish green.
There are so many beautiful colours to choose from ;-)

Carolins - I haven't conquered the master bedroom yet - so not really any set decor in there. The current colors in there are silver & a silvery-blue (if that makes sense) & dark wood. But it could change! I need to paint in there too.
Yes, agree with Carolins. Really should pull colour from bedroom.
Or, in your case, pull colour from bathroom to bedroom maybe :-)
Ok, I tried the SIlver Mist and Sea Salt paint and they looked really bright blue in the bathroom (plus husband hated it) & like bsellers said, there's not a lot of blue throughout the house. (even though I wanted it to work in the bath!) So went towards the creamier color, like one of the above recommendation, and it definitely brightened up the bathroom (it was too dark before). Thoughts? Is it too monotone now? What colors to accent with? Towels & bath mats? I want to get one of the sea scape pics noted above. And working on ceiling fixture replacement...
Maybe I need to repaint it?
It definitely is a brighter bathroom now. I do like the colour, but in pic 2 it looks like it is a bit yellow in combination with the floor. You're the only one who can decide if it looks good enough or if it doesn't. We can never see the true colour on our computer screens :-(

How about something like this? I bought a nice outdoor rug for you from Frontgate http://www.frontgate.com/outdoor-decor-accessories/outdoor-rugs/?#w=*&af=cat2:outdoorliving_outdoorrugs cat1:outdoorliving

A couple of pictures from Target and some glass jars on the countertop. I'm thinking white, cream, beige and blue towels and a light from Lampsplus. Do you like it? Or doesn't it 'float your boat'?
Oops... forgot to put in a rattan stool:
Pretty rug! I like the light too. Would you do dark hardware on the cabinets or leave them blank?
I like the color just fine and really like it when I see it dressed up from carolins! Love her ideas!!!
Since that's an outdoor rug, we'll need some sort of fluffy bath mat to step onto when get out of shower - husband got to have his toes sink into something soft :) Beige?
Glad you both like it :-)
Maybe we can find pretty glass knobs for your cabinet?
I love how she's able to put it together into all one big pretty picture!
Oooooh glass knobs, that would be pretty.
I know! That visual is theeee best!
Hmm... beige, ivory... I did pick out a rug that looks soft. It doesn't look like a flatweave one, I think it has a low pile.
Is there a place inside the shower to hang a bath mat and only have it out when used instead of all the time?
Do we need any kind of curtain or valence to soften up those brown wood shades? Or would that be tooo much?
We could hang the bath mat over the glass shower door? Or would that be too cluttery
  • 12 years ago
    last modified: 12 years ago
I think you might like a soft touch on the blinds, especially since you will see them when you are looking in your mirror. Roman shade in the colors of the rug?

That might be too cluttery and bathroomy. I understand hubby wanting soft, though, as I do, too. IF the rug fit that whole area and it was soft, that would be best. OR get the colorful one for the tub/sink area and a coordinating one for the shower that is more than just a mat.

I like the new paint color! Have you thought about adding pulls or knobs to the vanity? I think I'd do something in the dark bronze to coordinate with your door knobs and towel bars. Something like one of these, maybe?
I'm torn between these that match the towel holders & possible glass ones. Both are good ideas.
Since the knobs on the door are already there and dark, I really like the ones posted above for this space.
I was thinking more something like this, because I'm worried that adding dark bronze hardware to the cabinets will look very busy. Might not be the case, I'll see if I can mock something up. But I do think that glass with ORB would look softer and very elegant.
If the colour of the bath mat in front of the shower is close enough to the floor, I don't think it will look cluttered and you could just leave it.
I wouldn't add something to the window. I love the clean look of the blinds, and you wanted a sea/beach theme kind of thing. I think the blinds go well with that.

ORB AND GLASS? How awesome is that!

And think how nice it would be to think the window is done and nothing more to add....saves time and money.......which is double nice!
It looks okay I think :-)
Looks good!! Those glass ones also look beautiful, do those look better on the cabinets than what you have there?
I think the frames right there also make a difference, too. Very nice indeed!

I'm late on this project, but for the future we manufacture and make custom glass and mirrors. Whats special? If we have an image we can sandblast / paint images on glass / mirrors. ie your children on your shower door. Same for family crests for the man cave bar. Most of our work is creative glass table tops with designs sand blasted. Yes, we can cut and bevel any size or shape. We want to create one of a kinds.

    ORB and ORB/glass
Of course the glass looks very bright, because of the difference in photos I had to use (yours and the Cool Knobs and Pulls ones). Will not look as bright in real life.
Carolins - I was inspired for the bath that you created for me! I found some of these items on Houzz. I don't want it to be too cluttered, but wanted to know your thoughts about them as well as placement....

Sorry, didn't have much time yesterday and today. But I like what you've selected. Will take a closer look tomorrow :-)
    Hi,
Love the stool, the shell sculpture and the coral, the lamp is very pretty. Not sure if a wool rug would be the best option for a bathroom (have you seen how expensive it is? But it is beautiful!) Both paintings I think will be too large. Very pretty vases and candles.
Thanks! I wasn't paying attention to cost, just to whether or not something like that would look good in there. Thanks Carolins!!!
