The same chairs in black still won't work, I don't think... They are also such a specific style from a specific time period, that I don't think the two will ever relate well.

But black chairs in another style might, depending on the rest of the kitchen.

Can you post pics of the rest of the kitchen?

Jhx1 thanks. Hubby promised to modify rustic looking nook making curvy lines straight and maybe painting it. So that might work with the chairs since the celery green is kind of retro.
For floor we will go lighter laminate or porcelain or marble tiles probably white to go with the bright seating colour. Not sure about wall colour yet.

Kitchen is a mess , I am cleaning the cupboards but here it is . We will do the backsplash and countertop but not soon :(

I think the first step is to modify the lines of the seat. Then, the feedback you get about chairs will be consistent with the new lines and not the current lines.

sondramartina, I find you again with yet another dilemma. My dear, that bench doesn't go with anything in your house. The only thing about that bench that could work is the color, but, sadly, the shape of the upholstery is all wrong. I have no doubt hubby can modify the shape of the bench...but what will you do about the cushion?

Oh Grover i know ,I know. I even had a buyer for it but he did not want to sell it $^~)!### he was kind of tired of my recent decorations. So he upholstered it . I am stuck with it and I don't want rustic looking thing . It sucks. You know that I love MCM that's why I am trying with the Eiffel chairs.

The current bench is pretty charming as it is....

But looking at the photos it looks like the chairs (any chairs) will be smack dab in the path/clearance you need to get around in the kitchen effectively/comfortably.

As well, it doesn't quite fit the cabinet features...

I wonder if you might sell the bench as it is (it might be perfect for someone else) and modifying it to fit the modern Eames style chairs, I don't think it could ever be modified *enough*...

I like groveraxle's suggestion. Is your husband handy enough to make a sleeker, more modern bench? That might also allow you to have any chairs you wanted and possibly a table that might not cause the seating area to just out into the path?

If not, you might look into some sleeker style benches and longer/narrower profile nook.

Or even a less deep settee and bench might work with your chairs, kitchen and space...

Or the nook you have might be nice in a basement bar area. It's really a fun little booth as it is. I'd hate for you to chop into it, when it likely still won't solve the design problems...

This was a dilemma with happy ending( like many others ).
But thanks to Grover not- going -around -the- bush this happend.
Now I will have another dilemma ,how to fill up that corner once I sell this nook.
Maybe bench that Grover suggested or something ready made ,without making hubby busy.

I can see the lovely red flowers trying to make a statement :) why not try red chairs ,but stay within your style nothing like the white ones that you have .

I love your nook, but the wood contrasting with the green padded back and seats looks "Early American". I would paint the wood the same green as the upholstery. I would also use traditional wooden chairs and paint them as well as the table top the same green./ That will play up the charming use of space and not the individual pieces that make it up. Nice art work and walls that blend-not white- and it will be warm inviting and practical.

I like the one above. Its pretty expensive to have made. I also like the white chairs. Did you think about painting the original bench white. That might look nice.

The white chairs are curvy enough but not the right color. Making the seating bench with straighter lines and sanding it down and painting a different color will help. It seems too dark and heavy in the corner. I like the green. I love color! I would maybe have the chairs go with the color you choose for the new bench wood but keep them light & airy so it doesn't make that corner of the kitchen so heavy and weighted down. The picture above is neat, but really modern in style. I think with some tweeking of the bench and keeping the pop of green you will be surprised at the change.

I'd keep the chairs and replace the nook benches and table. Go for something with cleaner, modern lines to match the chairs.

I love the green so nice! I would get floral green cushioned seat chairs, something that supports the back and has comfortable seating!

Are you leaving banquette? It's country looking and your chairs are modern. I would change the green seat for all chairs. In a color.

Geez, doesn't anybody read? She's selling the bench and hubby is building a new one in mid mod style.

The chairs could work if you reupholster the built in with a white vinyl and update the surrounding accessories.

I returned the chairs until we decide how and what to do. Right now I have a buyer for the seating only so I might want to think how to incorporate different chairs with existing table.

He might make it but he just want to know the plan,what exactly do i want in that corner. If we don't sell the table I don't know how that table goes with mcm benches,probably not great. So I am for now considering different options.

Making a bench would make us do more work and winter is still here and brutal so it is not pleasant to go to the garage to do some wood working. And it would take more time. But bench will give me storage options underneath.

Depending on how modern or retro you want to go. Color wise I love the turquoise, sort of 50's vibe, also like the style of chair! In the green like the bench or a coordinating color would work. The more open backs will also give a more open space appearance. The clear will give a more open space appearance. The white are nice but not real exciting to me.

The clear chairs remind me of stripper shoes. Ha! Sorry, that's what I think of when I see acrylic furniture. All I can think of is a sweaty backside sitting on those. I don't know why, I realize that is disgusting.

Selling the bench leaves you with a lot of options. I'm following to see what you decide :)

@sondramartina can you post a close up of the table? I was concerned about the table in that space. The width and length may not work so well in that space without a bench (you need a minimum of 3' around the table for chairs clearance) plus you need path clearance

(In other words you need a bare minimum of 6' plus the width of the table in order to have chairs and table without a bench, plus 3' of path!)

So my question is, is the table worth keeping and working with?

Or is it better to design the space plan and then choose items that fit the space and your style?


With a bench you only need half the clearance on one side of the table.

Another thing to consider about the chairs you choose: try to get ones that fully scoot under the table. Some curvy chairs and most arm chairs only scooch in partially.

It doesn't feel great to have beautiful things you like but have trouble walking around them in the space, especially such a busy space that is used daily.

PS I kind of liked those bent hairpin legs on one of Grover's links. I've never seen those before!

If you keep the table, what about painting it? The color wood sort of clashes with the color of the kitchen cabinets.

Ok here it is. The size of the table is perfect for 4 of us and the way we have it now works for use space wise. I thought with the chairs would be the same , but it seams that I was wrong.Corner is 65' x 67'

It seems to me that *those* chairs are Perfect to combine with the table you have and a sleek bench that fits the corner! The curves relate to the oval table shape (or without the leaf when it's round) as well as the pedestal which is also not MCM at all.

But the chairs are MCM so they would relate to a simple MCM like bench too...tying them together

In addition, they don't intrude on the space/path/visuals around them so they really are a really good choice.

Are these older chairs? Or in bad condition? Or need replacing for some reason?

Oh those are just temporary in the kitchen now because I returned the Eiffel chairs. .They belong to my dining room and I love them there. I had a chance to buy another set on Craiglist but they were gone in no time :(
But this is something to consider although they look perfect in DR.

How about just get two more of the white chairs and ditch the bench? Maybe even 4 more white chairs. (one on each end and two on the sides if you have the leaf in)?? I think they look great together.

Throw the baby out with the wash! Go out and look for something simple with clean lines.., change the artwork, wall color, and everything....
