Hi Susan and Aburpee,

From the look of the deck it seems if they used a UV inhibitor Oil. Usually Ipe doesn't take staining well because of its density. We usually recommend Ipe Oil or Messmer's UV Plus. These two oils have worked wonderfully for all Ipe, Tigerwood, Cumaru, and many other hardwoods.

Looks wonderful! Couple of questions. Was the bridge designed with support from below? What size/type of wood is along the edges of the deck?

Do you think TWP 1500 would work on this? I've used it on decks before and it's the best at penetrating, but ipe is new to me so not sure if it would take. http://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series

Simply put a coat of IPE oil on when you finish the deck, and then one more coaty 6 months later. After that, about each 2 years. By the way, you can put IPE oil on quickly and effortlessly with a rag or roller. The deck in this picture would take less than 45 minutes to oil.
