We are going to replace the rustic travertine floor that is throughout our main floor. It is not our style, but it suits the current style of the house and we have come to appreciate the care free nature of this floor ( hides dirt in heavily used entry way, is durable under heavy hockey bags and in kitchen, cozy in color and movement despite being cold hard stone). We would like to stay light and move towards a more contemporary style (west coast modern, mid century) but really are struggling to pick a new floor that offers everything we have come to expect while still being warm and casual though clean and updated. We will also be replacing the kitchen counters and potentially the kitchen cabinet doors. Some of the flooring samples we picked up are shown in artificial and day light up against the existing fireplace that will stay. There is white oak, some limestones, a travertine and sandstone. My impression is that the stones feel too light and sterile (slick and monotone and easy to see any scratches in finish). Any comments about this are appreciated.
