Please help with furniture layout - 12.4x22 living room

I have no clue where to even start with designing a comfortable living/family room space. Details are:
1) Starting with blank template on 12.4x22 living room
2) Space is to the immediate right of front entry
3) There are two openings on left short wall - 96" opening walking in front door to right and then a 72" entry on far end of short wall that leads into kitchen
4) 60" fireplace centered on long wall where TV will be mounted above
5) There are two 67" windows on either end of the room - they are more left aligned to the long wall vs centered

If there is anyone out there with any thoughts are ideas on where to even start then I would be most grateful and appreciative.

Hi Deco - I see we are about to work!

Yes, the blue is still an accent. Gray, orange, blue are colors. I was thinking of a blue rug ....I have struggled with the rugs for the foyer, living room, and library...should they match sine all are open spaces to one another? Or, is it fine that the three are different. I was thinking solid blue in living room due to fear that geometric pattern on chairs will clash ....your thoughts?

I will play around with the tables ...I have been searching for dark wood and then was going to do blue lamp bases but am open to a painted blue also. Will pick up a garden stool and see how it does with the smaller chairs ....not a big fan of the ceramic but will give it a try and send photos. I ordered a starburst mirror that should come this week ...planned to put it above the desk to the right of the front door.

I start on the furniture placement suggestions Friday and welcome any ideas on the colors for rugs vs patterns, etc.

So much work to do ....
Don't fear a mix of patterns or using different rugs. Although they flow together, i think the three spaces are well enough delineated from each other to carry their own rug. I think the blocky desk by the front door is a little off-putting due to its height. May work better back by the kitchen entry, leaving the window, pair of chairs and drapes visible when you enter the foyer. If the starburst works with it they'll provide a nice focal at the end of the room as you enter and look toward the sofa.

Good feedback and agree with the desk ...eventually want to remove it period. Started moving furniture around so interested in your thoughts ....

Try centering the desk on that bit of wall. You'll have to adjust for draperies but I think it will work there. You might try the bombe chest there just to see... and the tall desk in the corner of the library by the window. A desk seems more appropriate in a library. What about moving your foyer demi-lune table to the right of the FP just to see how that type of piece will work there? Might try the black chairs in the library too? Hope you're full of energy! lol The best way to figure it out is by moving until it "clicks?"
Agree with your comments on the desk ...it was originally in the office (now library) prior to the renovation ....most likely will not keep at all.

The two dark brown leather chairs and the brown leather bench came from the bedroom and have been serving as placeholders until I can get all of the pieces. I have just been indecisive about the color and style of for the next two chairs that will blend with the gray and orange geometric. This is the next purchase. What do you think ...this makes six chairs and a sofa. Too many chair?

Also wandering how two tall leaning mirrors may look flanking fireplace behind the orange chairs? I can also replace the two orange chairs with armless slipper chairs but again getting stressed about colors.

Finally, second immediate purchase that I am anxious to get is a rug. I bought the orange rug in July for the living room .....however it clashed with the patterned chairs so moved to the library. Any thoughts or pics on rugs (solid vs pattern and blue vs gray).

I will get back at it tomorrow ...gearing up to shop this weekend so any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

Thanks for the continued guidance ...it is very much appreciated!

Next "try out" might be with the orange straight chairs at head and foot of dining table. Floor mirrors are nice, but you have to consider what will be reflected in them. The right one will double the foyer and library, but the left one may double the kitchen. If they lean too much they'll mostly reflect ceiling. I think I'd prefer something that could hang so the reflection won't be distorted. Take pix of chairs and rug you find this weekend. I'll shop online today and send some suggestions. You might look at homedecorators.com - they've worked well for me and my clients.

Here are a few from homedecorators. You can order little ones if they have them and decide and then get the larger size, using the smaller one elsewhere or returning it.

Two more - only shopped for blue this time.

Are you looking for a bench today? Try the black chairs and black bench in the library with the tall desk. Hope it won't look like hallowe'en with the orange rug! Is that rug too big for the foyer? You just have to try every possible option until it feels right.

Thank you for taking time to help with rug suggestions. The bottom right in the first set is actually one that I had looked at before ...either on wayfair or joss and main. I am having anxiety about the right rug and colors since the chairs have a print. Hubby wants more of a solid color and likes the bluish so may look closer at those ...like the idea of buying small one first. Will check out homedecorators.com

Moved the orange chairs to dining table ...actually looks nice and adds a much needed "pop" of color. Because the table is in kitchen, wandering if it is too formal looking though...anyway will leave over the weekend, see how it works and whether they can survive the kids.

So with the orange and brown leather chairs gone ...do you think adding back four chairs for a total of 6 is too many? I thought about two at fireplace and a nice daybed type bench (high sided arms) but just haven't come across any.

With the gray sofa and burnt orange ego chairs, any suggestions on a color for the fireplace chairs?

Looking for chairs and rugs this weekend so wish me luck!

Appreciate you and all of the help this week. Hope your weekend is wonderful!

Yes, orange rug is 9x12 ....foyer is 5x6

I think that bottom right rug will be beautiful. I'd use it's colors in selecting any more furniture. The pattern on your chairs isn't so big that it dominates - I'd say it is a medium print. Generally, you want a large print, a medium print and a small one. Check the ARKfabric selection we started with to see how they've mixed pattern. Here are a couple of idea books - just search for "pattern" to find more. They should give you some confidence. I think you can use a large print rug and then one more print - maybe a small one on throw pillows &/or the bench. I'd go solid for the chairs flanking the FP - maybe a soft blue or cream like the ones in the rug If you bring something home make sure it is returnable. If you decide to keep the chairs at the dining table consider treating them with Scotchgard - DIY or send them out for a professional treatment. You have seating for 3-5 on the sofa, so a total of four chairs, and the bench that can be pulled into the seating group will be plenty. I think you said the kids will be using this room as well. What age are they? How many friends do they have over that need to be seated? Consider poufs for younger ones and beansacks for older ones to sit on. Bean loungers can be thrown in a closet when not needed, so they don't have to impact your space with the kids are not using it.

Hello! How did the shopping go?
    Good Morning!

Not much luck on chairs or rugs but did find a piece art for above the sofa. I am getting a bit frustrated with selecting the final furniture pieces ...cannot seem to get placement down. I searched this weekend for the following:

    2 solid chairs
2 demi lune cabinets (like better than the tables)
1 buffet server or wine type cabinet for outside the kitchen entry
    1 rug

Maybe I need to focus on online shopping ....
Here is the art ...going to put up this weekend...hope it works. Is there a certain height distance above sofa that we should hang?
Also moved the orange rug over that I bought from Joss and main ...initially for the living room. It was supposed to be a 9X12 ...but actually is 8.5x9.5 (88.5x118.5). Just put it back to get idea ...due to odd width in front of fireplace ..the largest width I can do is 10 but that takes it all the way back to the wall under the sofa ...is that fine?

Any other suggestions on rug size?
This is type of chair I was shopping for so let me know if I am off ...
Finally, to answer your last questions ...we no longer need to build space for kids. It is though our family room ...however since the Renovation they (16 and 11) spend most of time with friends in the bonus room which has pool table, sectional, TV...
The style of chair will work as long as it is comfortable to sit in for an evening of conversation. Did you find anything you liked? I'll be offline for the next 48 hours, but will be checking in again Sat evening. Maybe you'll find something this weekend.

    Good Morning Deco!

Well I think I am on the verge of a few purchases this week ...

    1) decided to stay with all dark wood instead of colored tables and chests. Planning to purchase the sideboard that goes with the dining table and chairs and place on the wall leading into the kitchen, with the starburst above it. I measured both and they fit with room for a curtain panel. See pic below ..

    2) after looking at hundreds of blue and gray rugs, I keep coming back to the attached rug below. The only hesitancy I have is that the reviews say it is darker than the original photo. The pic below is from a reviewer ....I was looking at a 9x12 which will still leave a lot of hardwood open on both ends of the room.

    3) we hung the art over the sofa ...we like it but definitely want to bring in brighter pieces on the walls flanking fireplace.

    4) chairs - still searching

Open to your feedback and suggestions!

Starburst ..,another canvas debating on but not in love with
  • 11 years ago
Hello, baylor30! Lost track of you somehow. Like the options above! Did you move forward with any of them?

Hi Deco - Hope you are well. With basketball season wrapping up, I am back at it, with a few recent purchases as wel a decisions to make. My goal,is to complete the room by April. As always, your feedback or recommendations welcome and appreciated.

Please note that I did purchase a smaller size of the initial blue rug that we went with; however, it was dull and muted. The orange rug and tall lamps are in the space as placeholders from other rooms.

    Decisions pending:

Stay with solid navy panels but find with white darkened lining?

    Find rug ...gray or navy?

Find pillows for chairs and rest of couch ..add pattern?

Find gray, blue, or orange lamps for sideboard and console tables?

    Add floor lamps?

    keep plants?

    Mirrors or artwork flanking fireplace?

What to put on walls flanking front window above chairs?

Deco - Not sure why the photos rotated and was unable to fix so hope you can still view easily

Looking at your points and previous photos:
    1. don't think I ever saw your navy panels, or did you actually install?
    2. Go with the rug you love, but be sure the size is right. If you buy at brick and mortar, take a measuring tape to be certain.
    3. Don't add pillow pattern or color until the rug is down.
    4. Fred Gonkowski has a great site for anything about lamps. Tells you what shape works with what table, etc. http://fredgonsowskigardenhome.com/category/lighting/

    5. See above link. We'll decide once all the furniture is in.

    6. Plants can wait - put them outside come spring if we don't find a spot for them

    7. I always opt for artwork unless you have something beautiful that you want to double.

    8. Don't worry about the front window yet. Once drapes are up it will take on a new personality.

Did you ever try the orange chairs at the ends of the dining table?

Baylor - where are you? We seemed to have lost connection. You pix are looking good. I have to say the pair of lamps on the sideboard are way too large in both scale and height. I'm liking most of the individual pieces, but think you're a bit overloaded with chairs. It may be due to the large table at the window which is pushing the two accent chairs further into the room. My original plans showed them with a small round table between them. That would allow you to push them close to the window. What's going on in the foyer and the library by the stairs? I think the navy drapes may be a bit too wide, but since they're not installed its hard to say. They do add drama but you may need to go with something more narrow.

Hi Deco - thank you for following up ...for whatever reason I did not recall seeing notification of your last comment so I do apologize.

Thanks for taking the time to respond ....appreciate all of your guidance. I did move some of the pieces around again and am attaching photos. I am really just struggling deciding on a rug ..not sure why. I am thinking a 9x12 lighter gray rug with minimal ivory or blue accents ...more clean line vs busy pattern. I have also been searching for a 5x8 rug for the foyer with a matching runner for the hallway.

The panels are about the same. We all in the family like navy but just not sure on solid vs maybe a geometric pattern. If I can get the rugs figured out then I think everything else will be easy for me.

I will post new photos and let me know your thoughts. I will also check out the lamp site. I have about two months before travel basketball starts for both kids so trying to get living room and the sitting room complete by then. I have not yet done anything with the sitting room.

    Photos coming ...

Foyer ...this area can be replaced with new console ...mirror needs to stay as is hubbies favorite piece ..although wander if it needs to be lowered

This room is blank slate and can be all new pieces. The old chairs that the dog are in will be donated. The leather chairs came from another room and the dog are not allowed on. They can stay here or be be relocated elsewhere. I remove done of the three bookcases and it is being used in another room. I am open to the bookcases also going as well as the piano going. If bookcases stay then I know they will have to be decluttered and mixed with photo and decor items.

Yes, we did try the orange chairs and I am 50/50 ...the hubbies does not care for them in the kitchen.

Here also is an old photo of a smaller table between the chairs at the window ..although square instead of round. We really would like to keep the half moon table as it was one of the first pieces of furniture purchased for us many many years ago. Originally had it at the front door.

I do like the orange chairs with the table, but realize they may be better in an actual dining room than exposed to kitchen odors and oils. Try the table, chairs and the sideboard in the library. Put the bow front cabinet in place of the sideboard left of the window, and use the demi-lune in the foyer. I don't think the bow front cabinet will overwhelm the light colored bench like the sideboard does. The armless slipper chairs look much better by the FP than the orange ones, mainly because they can be tucked in closer to it.
Seeing the navy curtains in daylight, I think you'll have to get something that is lined. They look too flimsy with the light shining through, and the curtains need to hang more on the wall space and just kissing the edges of the side window frames. Those two pieces of art are identical, aren't they? That's not working either. They are much too large for the space either side of the window, and are too crowded in. If the art wasn't matched, I'd suggest we use them in a vertical stack, but not when they're just alike.

Here's my revision of the two rooms. if you'd like to try the dining room concept. You might use one of the bookcases by the kitchen entry. Here I show a pair of those bombe chests flanking the FP. Chairs and bench are moved to help with separation of the window and FP chairs.

Deco - Thank you so much for taking time to design the sketches. The formal dining room is just not space that we would use much so for us it will not be the best use of the space. For the living room ...it the right side fireplace chair and the two at window that look cluttered due to the fireplace being centered to the wall the course is on vs the long wall.

I will try to play around with pieces this week. Hope to select a rug and panels also. Did I understand you to mean that I should go with the 42 width panel instead of the 54 width? Use 2 or 4 panels for each window?

Thanks again for the continued support. I am thinking I want to use a small loveseat in a blue color in the sitting room so any ideas on that appreciated.

42 should be fine unless you want to close them - 2 per window as below.

Small suggestion -- in all of your pics you have both sets of chairs angling towards each other. It creates some crazy angles when viewing your pics. Consider placing the chairs next to the window 90 degrees to the wall, parallel each other. Leave the other set that belongs to the main grouping angled towards each other.

Hi Deco - praying that you are doing well. While browsing online a few weeks ago, I finally ran across a rug that I liked so went for it ...it is simple, low pile but a pattern and navy color that we both like. I also tried the bookcases as you suggested but like the sideboard better in the space. I am now trying to decide on whether to do gray roman shades with an orange or navy patterned curtain ...or maybe a gray curtain? Will attach and send photos ....as always, would welcome your feedback.

hey was wondering hows the living looking now? any updates? loved where you had the cream accent chairs by the fire place with the navy blue geometric rug in the center.

I am so excited to have found this post. This almost my living room exactly! It is a 23 X 14 in space with the fireplace and entry ways the same. The only difference is the window on the same side as the front door is 103 inches long as opposed to the shorter window. I have been struggling with furniture placement for years and have never found any that I like. I am now considering buying new living room furniture and this post and pictures have really given me some ideas. The color scheme I want is blues, greens and creams/khaki.. Decoenthusiaste..I love your decorating style. I need your help!:)
