Need help with landscape design

Am looking to redo our backyard and sideyard. Need help with landscape design - both soft and hardscape as well as deck with fireplace. We are in the SF bay area.

Large pots with small palm trees and other suitable upright foliage planted below with flowering annuals or perennials would really help soften up and make an inviting sitting space beside the house. You could really use a deep seating conversation area back there as your outdoor living room, overlooking your newly landscaped pond.

As well, you could remove some of the flat patio stones around you pond and landscape it with possibly a grouping of Date Palms or Christmas Palms at either end of the pond area with some low growing ground cover in front of the pond and an assortment of perennial plants and low growing shrubs behind the pond. Assorted sized pots of geraniums added around for color. Some outdoor lighting by your landscaped pond to enjoy form inside at night.

It might help to add some bed space along the house to soften it and border the patios giving more delineation to the space overall, doesn't have to be really wide 2' will do with some dwarf upright plantings. If you are intent on keeping the water feature some kind of vertical element over the top like a pergola or arbor would highlight the feature better and the added shade down below will make it more interesting (and added shade for patio sitting). The pressure treated timber wall along the side appears to detract from the space quite a bit and could stand to be replaced, Corten steel would be a great option if you can price it into the budget. The timbers also do not appear to correlate well with either the patio space, water feature or higher end look of the home.

A horizontal fence placed in front of the chain link fence and overgrown vegetation will also help the space quite a bit as it looks to be an is-ore. A more diverse paver layout with either varying colors or varying materials would also aid the space as well giving it more depth and interest. Also if the budget allows an outdoor built in b-que or grill space would be a great addition and spruce up the entire area overall even if you don't do anything else giving it a higher end feel. Some kind of ornament or other trinket of some sort attached to your cable system would also provide interest to the space, draw the eye up and provide a type of ceiling to the space (even if they are small especially if vibrant in color). Good luck with your transformation if you haven't done so already.
