Love your hardwood. Is it red oak?

Thank you. They are natural oak but have definitely aged beautifully (they are over 40 years old).

@ Sugarmonster. I hear what you're saying about the slipcovers and have thought about it, but the chairs are recliners and can't find slipcovers that would move. I am really hoping to work with them the way they are. HELP?!

I would darken the legs of the chairs. Pull the colors from the chairs to use as accent color throughout the room. I like the console table or even a credenza under the art. Add a bold/modern coffee table. Add a side table to the other side of the sofa and another one to the left chair that has none now. Put a plant like a fig tree or palm tree where the baker's rack is now.

what about moving the couch on the wall that your artwork is on and the chairs opposite that. seems the entry from dining is blocking path. get rid of the standing shelf piece and do some end tables with lamps.
just a thought from the pictures you sent its hard to tell if that would work!

Thank you iwanit, I like your ideas. I w have been thinking of darkening the legs, as well. Describe a, oi usually have the room set up the way you suggest, but I changed it at Christmas and kind of like it this way for a change.

The two pieces of art really do need a narrow console table under them to ground them. Then the small table there could go over by the other chair so it has some place for a cup/glass.

Jcpenney has slipcovers for recliners like yours, also surefit is a good source. They are stretchy and fit well. Lots of color/pattern choices. Good luck with your room!

I will check it out. j1651 I will definitely check out the slipcovers, although we are in Canada, so it has to be done online (difficult to return if I order it and it doesn't fit). Thanks abbyjean, we are looking at having a console custom made for that wall. On that note, should we do 6 or 7 feet? The wall is 12 feet. We would only do 12-15 inches deep.

A couple of points. .

Go as long with your console as possible without running into the chair by the kitchen. You do not want to crowd that doorway more than it already is. Furniture needs elbow room. When you switch the sofa and console in the future, there will be no problem fitting the console in front of the window - it is plenty wide enough to accept any length of table.

Bring your draperies into the corner where your baker's rack is now. An equal amount on the other end. The walls undraped are not really usable for any furniture and, if covered by panels, would complete them. The draperies could be stronger in pattern. Not dark, but maybe a stripe that coordinates with your chairs - close in colors and stronger.

The chair legs do not seem dated but more current. If you darken them, they will cause the chairs to feel older.

Find more dramatic artwork. Everything in this room is mid-value and sleepy. You need some darks and lights to make it wake up, along with some punches of color. Take your chairs as inspiration for hues and then go with those colors only more saturated, darker or lighter. I cannot tell from your photos what colors are in the pattern, but if there was, say, a light blue, use a lamp on the console that has a wedge wood blue ceramic base.

You have a great space! I'm not a fan of slip covers, and the chairs look to be a great place to land. The pattern isn't modern but it is muted and you can do alot with the colors. The rest of your room is very neutral. Complimentary pillows definitely will add more pop and a weightier coffee table will add volume to the middle of the room. I also think you could bring color to the curtain panels. Adding the console under the art work will also allow the opportunity for the eye to rest on interesting pieces.

I love the sharing that happens on this site.... so much good information! I just have to make time to go shopping!! ps. kgrad... I have to agree about slipcovers. I love the look in someone else's house, or a cottage, but I think I would have a difficult time living with them.

How about moving your two chairs...put one on the picture wall and the other with it's back to the stair railing (would be facing each other and closer to the couch). If you want to keep the bakers rack...is there room for it on the wall as you enter from the stairwell? End tables, lamps, pillows and your room will look nice without any obstructions into the various rooms. A few plants around will make it homey also.

Hi Erinsean Thank you so much for your comments... I have had it that way over the years, as well and it does work. I am really wanting to get rid of the baker's rack.... Time for a change! I really appreciate all of your suggestions! If anyone has any suggestions as to pillows, drapes etc, would love to hear them!! Hope everyone is having a great weekend, so far....

The lead edge of the draperies should be moved to just in front of your silhouette shade. Ideally the fabric should go to the glass. I agree on a darker color as right now the drapes are barely visible and will frame the opening well.
