Love all walls same color or texture!!!!

It depends. Accent walls can be really effective or overwhelming. Color is a way to visually manipulate space and create ambience. I would hesitate to do walls in multiple rooms because that might dilute the impact, but, like any other decorating technique, when done well and correctly, they are dynamic.

I like Angie Smith's comment. Nothing is out of style, if that is what you want. Everyone has their own sense of style. The pros push something new and different because that's how they stay in business. A designer may not like my style, but I do because it makes me feel warm and comfortable. I like accent walls in some homes, but not in others. However, if someone wants one...it's their house to decorate the way they want.

Yes, as long as its done correctly. In the UK there is a fad for large flowers on wall paper. Im not talking tasteful here either, dramatic, most certainly. It will pass soon, I hope.

Two of my living room walls are painted toasted cranberry and two are painted yellow. I had at least six sample colors on the wall and couldn't decide. I think my husband got exasperated and just narrowed it down to two colors! For the most part I like it. Sometimes, though, it feels like we are in a McDonalds.

An accent wall can work beautifully in a space, as long as it's the right wall.

I've had accent walls - until I grew tired of them and repainted the whole room another color. But I get tired of anything over time. Luckily, paint is relatively inexpensive.

A big splash of bright color can be enlightening.
I call my marigold yellow wall My Happy Wall, because it's such a beautiful, mind-opening color. The other walls in my office are Sugarcookie by BM, all finishes are eggshell.
Another option is to use the same color family (which is what I did) but in the darkest or lightest shade. This ties the room together in a subconscious way, while still making a splash, whether big or subtle.

A well contrasted accent wall can make the wow factor happen in your home. Bear in mind that the painted portion is only one part of the whole. As long as it enhances the overall beauty then it is a plus.

Accent walls can look fantastic in some homes but really odd in others; it all depends on the overall style and color scheme.

De gustibus non est disputandum "In matters of taste, there can be no disputes" Personally when I find it appropriate I would go for an accent wall. I like a bit of Drama and used wisely it can really define the mood of the space. My stronger drive in this question is "do it" if it gives the space a punch!

I only like an accent wall if there is some architectural feature that one would like to highlight - or perhaps in the backs of shelves as above. Perhaps I mostly don't like it because so many folks choose red and contrast it with a light color - nope. don't like that at all.

Like a lot of others I really think it depends on the place, the overall feeling of the space, how the accent wall looks with everything else and the individual style of the person who lives with the wall. I guess I don't think the question can be answered with a simple yes or no.

Accent walls are great for adding a special touch to an otherwise "unusable" or boring wall. We used brick to accent this foyer wall in our Wallace model and we think the vintage, yet modern charm grabs attention and leaves a lasting impression on each guest who enters the home.

Most I have seen in person have been red glossy paint with not enough coats of paint (or not primed correctly), and I always think "EEK what a job to paint over that mess!"

I have always been very anti-accent wall (most of them are red/burgandy--agree with gypsyrose!), but recently someone suggested I do it in my son's very small bedroom and though hard to tell from this terrible pic, I do think it added interest and made it so much cozier than if it were all the light pewter color. Hope you agree!

white walls=blank canvas. A punch of well placed color as an accent in a room can turn a mediocre room GREAT ! I have noticed a great deal of people submitting design dilemnas have plain bare white walls.....and no artwork on the walls. If someone is too timid to do an entire wall in a statement color, my advice is always the same...get some framed artwork up on the walls to bring in accent color in the art itself or the mattes.

Not every room "asks" for an accent wall, having said that we are currently adding about 30% to the footprint of a house we bought earlier this year meaning major renovation and serious structural work. We have reduced a 4 bedroom house to an extended 2 bedroom with a gym room and expanded kitchen and master suite. The 2 Bedrooms will have accented walls to complement the feel and atmosphere of each. The lounge and conservatory will not have accent walls and the kitchen is a fairly neutral mix of gray tiles and a fire engine red 6 burner stove with a few red accent lights. A bit of" in your face" can really punch up an otherwise mundane pallet. An accent does not need to be "high energy" either it can just punctuate the scheme you are striving for. We are still in the roughing in and walls stage so no pics for this conversation at this time but I will post the before and afters when we are at the occupation stage.

I voted yes! But an accent doesn't necessarily have to be a pop of color, it can be a change of texture or wall material as well!

My living room and dining room are open to each other. To make the dining room more intimate and set it apart, I painted one wall a strong cranberry. I chose the wall that the china cabinet is against,, to minimize the "punch." The wall is across the from the fireplace, another focal point in the space. That lets the living room stand on it's own. All other walls are a Ralph Lauren muted green-taupe color. (Using green and red together adds life and interest.) Furniture is cherry, two oriental carpets, and a magnificent Chippendale sofa.

Forgot to add: The accent wall has a door in it. I just painted door and framing in the cranberry color, so you don't actually see it.

Accent walls aren't for meant for every home, has to be the right space & design!!

About 30 years ago we tried to repaint a large eat in kitchen that had high gloss blood red accent wall right where the table went...we ended up with a final coat of tangerine as you could not get rid of the red continuing to bleed through layers of primer, it would have been cheaper and quicker just to sheetrock over it and start with a fresh surface....guess that's what really soured me on them, particularly "burgundy blood red" accent walls.

If you've never done it before or can't afford the "cost of experimentation" ... avoid them!

I think it depends on the space. Sometimes accent walls work beautifully and others it may ruin the look of the room.

Yes, I've always thought one accent wall gives your room or space a pop of color since I use primarily off whites and a monochromatic furniture and mixing of nice woods, ie danish modern like walnut, or lighter woods. I believe in making your space "yours" creating your own vision of how it reflects your style, and personality and ultimately creating an inviting home environment including outside spaces as well...

Accent walls are great love then , good for someone who's not sure about using bold colors and people who want to give any room a little pop . The nice part about accent walls is you can change your mind on the color with out having to spend a lot of money painting the whole room .

An accent wall only appeals to me logistically and aesthetically if there is an outstanding architectural feature on the wall AND if the wall either meets open passage areas on both ends OR connects to another wall perpendicularly on both ends.

For example, I did not paint an accent wall in my own living room because the fireplace wall meets with the open passageway to my kitchen on one end, and on the other end it connects perpendicularly to another wall in the room. If I were to use an accent color on the wall, it would look like I started to paint the entire room that color but didn't finish yet.

Now my living room has a cathedral ceiling but on the opposite side of the room from where the fireplace wall is situated, I have my dining area with a standard 8 ft. ceiling. So I put a chair rail around that area with picture frame moldings below the rail. The entire lower area is painted semi-gloss white while the area above the chair rail is a dark color that complements the living room color. The living room is "Ecru" by Sherwin Williams, and the dining area color above the chair rail is "High Tea" also by SW.

Just for the record, I NEVER use any other paint but SW, because I found the colors are always true to their color cards.

Yes, Richard. For me, there needs to be some logic for painting an accent wall-such as making an architectural feature like a fireplace standout or a structural feature like a brick wall, or a wall that is open ended on both sides rather than butting up against a corner where the perpendicular wall will be another color. I personally like continuity of color with each room flowing gracefully into the other while each stands out on its own. I emphasize the word PERSONALLY. I have been in homes where every color of the rainbow is used with no rhyme or reason. To each his own!

I think accent walls are a bit over done now and getting slightly boring. Instead of paint filling a space to add interest to a room, how about something else, wall sculpture or painting.

If it is done right, it is fine. Depends on personal tastes though too.

Accent walls are a really good way to bring a person's personal style into their space. I personally love it!
