Need help choosing the tile for our new mudroom

Please suggest tile options for our new mudroom that will coordinate with the existing hardwood floor and will create a seamless transition. The mudroom is small (@ 6'x4') and will have a bench, hooks and white cabinets that match the kitchen. It could (color not chosen yet) be painted a light gray - Cumulus Cloud (Martha Stewart for HD) to match the kitchen. The mudroom is to the right of the kitchen and when you enter the kitchen you will see the mudroom as it is open and does not have a door.

Our builder suggested continuing with a hardwood floor so it flows nicely, however, we will keep our dog's water bowl in the mudroom and she drips water when she drinks. I thought about the new tile that looks like hardwood but I am unsure if I have to match the length, width and color exactly. I am open to all tile options in terms of size and color. Your suggestions to help create the seamless transition I hope for will be much appreciated.

Drooling dogs make for such challenging dilemmas! I like the wood floor idea and would just find a cute little rug or placemat to put under it.

Thank you, Laura. If she just dripped it wouldn't be such a problem but she walks and drips and I don't want to put a rug in the mudroom. Because she is such a sloppy drinker and this is where my family will come in from the snow and mud, I do think tile is the way to go. Any other thoughts would be very much appreciated.

We have a very dribbly drinker as well, and one of our now deceased dogs was that way, and it took the shine off the vinyl plank flooring we had at the time so I appreciate your dilemma.

I would go with a large porcelain tile, but I can't suggest one since I don't know your tastes. Daltile has some nice tiles at reasonable prices. We went with their Atlantic Beach 18x18" tile, and have been very happy with it.

When you have some time, go to the website of a tile company such as thetileshop.com and go through their product line to get an idea of what's available.

I think tile is the way to go especially with water.

I'd continue the hardwood through the entire area. Place mat or scatter rug for dog bowl.

Have you checked out marmoleum? Plus there are some really interesting linoleums out there that are real easy to keep clean.

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions. I would like to use tile but not sure how to make a seamless transition from the hardwood to the tile. The mudroom will be open - no door- so I was hoping to find a tile color that wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb. The mudroom will most likely be painted a light grey.

Shouldn't the tile person knows how to do that or are you doing the work yourshelf?

Can you take the tile to the door and then you should be able to use a transition piece.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, our builder knows how to lay the tile. I am hoping for color suggestions. What color/size/type of tile would look best with our existing hardwood...

I would use something big with less grout lines. Do you have Home Depot or Lowes or any tile places in your area. Porcelanosa has some really cool porcelain tiles that looks like wood. Build Direct will send you free samples.

Our boxer is a messy drinker so I understand your dilemma! We stopped the wood floor from the adjoining room and used tile for the laundry room where the water dish is. Best decision ever!

I'll be doing brick in our Mudroom & laundry (transitioning from wood in kitchen). Check out Archer & Buchanan Architecture's pictures. They feature one I'm in love with!

Been meaning to post this for some time. The mudroom is obviously not finished but I wanted to show the tile and thank everyone for the excellent suggestion. I really love the way this turned out. Thanks again for all the help and advice.

What is the name of the tile that you ended up with? I am looking for a tile for my mudroom as well.
