Painting wood paneling

Wood, should it be painted or not? IMHO it looks dated. House built in 1996. Red wall color in kitchen is going away so is back splash. If you wanted to paint it what color would you do? Would paint kitchen cabinets and paneling in the Family Room the same color.

I like the present natural wood more in the kitchen than the family room. I would paint the family room walls and front panels of the peninsula facing the family room a creamy white. I would definitely keep the beautiful beams natural. In the kitchen I might paint just the free-standing island a very dark greenish grey ( like SW Serious Grey ). Paint color and back splash could tie it all together. Agree the fireplace color and grout could use some help. Maybe paint the brick the same greenish grey. Put in a marble or granite hearth.

Wood is faded & dirty. The floor is dark. Wood needs to be light. Once painted always painted. I would restain. In a ginger color. It would pop. You need to clean it with murphy's oil soap. And floor looks dusty.

I would also paint kitchen walls a buttery color. It will make cabinets look more to ceiling.

My sister just took possession of the house yesterday. Floors were recently redone by former owner and they are in excellent shape. The wood IMHO doesn't look great either. I'm for painting all of it ;)

At least it is light and you have enough window light to keep it from being a cave.Alot would depend on your furnishing colors. pick the wall color from your furnishing and kitchen ware. The backsplash looks fine in the pictures but if you replace it make sure it does not fight with the stone pattern. you could do all the woodwork in a creamy white but that will be a lot of work especially if you carry it through the kitchen. I could see painting just the kitchen. with the red gone I think it will look great.

I think with lots of light furnishings and a nice rug such the wood could be OK and be casual and cozy. I would consider more of a whitewash rather than painting it to keep some of the grain followed with maybe a touch of glaze to make it less pink. Maybe even true liming wax or chalk paint instead of paint.

But what is throwing me off is the really white mortar around the firebox. I would stain that a darker color to tone it down..

I would paint everything EXCEPT the mantle surround and stain that darker. Then I'd re-tile the FP and do the bullnose edges. Beautiful rooms!

I just seen a picture in country living magazine. It had redwood color(cherrywood) paneling just like yours! Paint yours that & it will go with fp & widen the room!

I would stain the exposed beams to match the floor and then paint the paneling white. This could really pop.

juttabb, hi sorry so late in posting a response. This is my sisters home. They have left it as it is for now. They painted the surrounding rooms. They just purchased the home last year. If she does anything I will followup, I promise!!

You may consider to paint the paneling white and restain the cabinrt a dark maybe espresso color.

I think it will be gorgeous when the room is furnished & area rug added. Maybe repaint the ceiling fan w/ a paint used for metal. Do it oil rubbed bronze. My hubby did that for me w/ a very old but functional fan & it was like new again. Add light draperies from ceiling to the floor with grommet tops.
