It's a great house! What part of the country are you in (growing zone)? Do you use this side door?

Have you considered decorative canvas awnings and an updated insulated door. You could also landscape by installing beds along your house with appropriate sized shrubbery. Maybe blue rug juniper to accent the evergreen to the left of the garden. If your budget allows, I would remove the one piece concrete stairs, and install brick stairs/stoop and bring the brick in the form of a walkway to the driveway. You could also extend the picket fence down the length of the driveway. It appears there may be additional sections of picket fencing around the house. Have you considered fully encircling the house with this fencing? If you are a gardener, you can edge the driveway along the new fence line with iris, daisy, daffodil to some taller flowering greenery. If not a gardner, there is reliable, relatively low maintenance monkey grass. Just some thoughts. Good luck.

To answer Kim Waltons Question, no we do not use the side door on a regular basis. Our main entrance is along the sidewalk side of the house. We live in the Mid-west; zone #4. I like Judithladams advice to remove the concrete steps and replace with brick steps. Wanted to replace those awful looking steps anyway. Thanks!

Once your plants you have now can bloom in late spring, take a picture and see what could be added. I know I'm antsy for the green landscaping to come back to life!

What a lot of potential your exterior has, bindlje1! The recommendation of adding shutters is a great one because there is a lot of open space on your facade. We are envisioning your home as a farmhouse with panels or louvered shutters and a bold color door to stand out, similar to below.

I love your red water pump. Can you pick up the color elsewhere? Door? Red geraniums?

I would put a path from the door to the street, the flat big rocks filled in with pea gravel. You can plant flower beds outlining it and put solar lights in it and put them next to the house. Also plant a red bud tree or some kind of tree with color, it will also add value to your house.

Also change the paint of the exterior, yellows, blues, greens.

I agree with a lot of what has already been suggested. Beautiful home with a lot of potential!!! I would start by painting the exterior, maybe adding some shutters or trim and painting them an accent color. I would also add some trees, bushes or flowers. Even continuing the picket fence would make a huge difference! It can be overwhelming just take one step at a time and don't rush through it. Have Fun!!!

The house looks hungry. Was it uninhabited for awhile? Is it often foggy there? When will it get green and for how long during the year? It needs some blossoming plum. Do you know the little pink Cecile Bruner roses or other old fashion roses? plus fruit trees. When/if youdecide to paint, why not a cheery yellow or pink? I wonder what state you're in... All around the Bay area there are lovely color combos. The important thing is to begin to know what YOU LIKE! Drive around. When you see something you like whether in person or online, note the colors and style. Let it be a process and trust yourself to get there in time. Is there any need to rush? I'd be pretty tempted to maintain it's old character.

if you keep the house white, I would go toward a dark purple trim. If youkeep the white trim, I would go toward light pink. The funny thing is the line of electrical up the side, that's why I think there needs to be a tree or two and roses so your eyes can appreciate more. Oh, and how about a raspberry patch. I would want to grow old with a raspberry patch outside of my old farm house.

I'd suggest a few mature trees and some type of hedges. Beautiful home by the way!
