Creamy White Trim vs. White Trim

Hi,

I am building a new home, a modern Tudor. I love the kitchen below with the creamy white cabinets and stained island. I am also inspired by the stained range hood in the second pic. My dilemma is my trim color. While I love white kitchens, they are often a touch sterile to me. So, I like a light creaminess to white cabinets to warm the room. My floors will be walnut stained and hand-scraped. However, I have the choice of white trim or off white trim throughout the house. In pics that I have seen, I don't like white trim with off white kitchen cabinets! Will I date the house if I choose an off-white trim, like the color of the cabinets? Also, the latest trends say white and off-white kitchens are hot, but I see far more white kitchens on Houzz.com than off-white/creamy white. Your thoughts?

I would choose what you want to choose! You can certainly have creamy kitchen cabinets and have all the trim in the kitchen be that same creamy color. In the rest of the house, you can switch to white IF YOU WANT. But if you don't want, then stay with the cream.

Your builder is trying to keep his costs down by having you choose one or the other for the entire house. You can inquire if you can pay extra to have the white where you want it and the cream where you want it.

Thank you! Yes, we get a charge for everything so I am trying to pick my battles and reserve my funds! I think I will go with the creamy white but the designers are whispering in my ear that white is best and the hot trend! I want warm, classic and timeless.

Btw, what do you think of the hood being stained with the island and all other cabinets creamy white?

I like the idea of the hood and island being stained and other cabs being cream. I'd go with the cream and if you decide to sell in a few years and the whole world is demanding white, then you hire a painter! No big deal.

Thank you!!!!! Last question, i think i know what you'll answer but here goes....do you have a rule of thumb with fixture, hardware and lighting finishes? I like some consistency in tones but not always matchy matchy...your thoughts.

I like chrome faucets, cabinet hardware in silver or black, island pendants in silver or black, door hardware in brushed nickel, but breakfast chandelier can be any color you want. What were you thinking of using?

The cabinet hardware can be different on island and wall cabs, plus of course, I use both knobs and pulls and sometimes use different size pulls depending on drawer size. Knobs go on doors and pulls go on drawers, with the occasional exception.

I am on the fence with my faucet. Again, i like warm (i have copper now and I love!) and chrome is so surgical to me, but love it in pics. Cabinet hardware i was thinking of aged bronze or black. Haven't found pendants, yet. Door hardware i also want dark.

I try not to use fixtures that are all from the same collection, tho I do have some favorite bath sconces that I repeat in a couple of baths.

You'll have a lovely look with a copper faucet, and black or bronze hardware. It's right for you. I'm used to dealing with what's popular in Austin and I don't think that's where you're building.

You will not date a house using off white paint for trim. It would look best with the kitchen, especially if open concept.

I would take a sample of white and the creamy white and see how it looks in your actual kitchen—the room’s light may nudge you one way or the other. Depending on the natural light, the bright white may not look quite as bright as you think. If you take the cabinets up to the ceiling, you won’t have to worry about mixing cabinets/crown in different colors since the crown will be part of the cabinet and matched as so—that way you notice the cabinets, not the trim and a door casing that is a slightly different white won’t be very noticeable.
