Butcher block that is used for food prep should not be stained. And, it's difficult to stain maple, which is what most butcher block is formed from. Only use BB if you plan to leave it natural. Choose a wood that is naturally darker if you want darker counters. Walnut, zebrawood, jatoba, etc.

Try Black Walnut if you like a dark color. I think that would be beautiful in this kitchen. Sophie Wheeler is 100% correct that it's best not to stain if you want to use it for food prep!

I included a couple of photos of our Black Walnut that I think would be beautiful. If you are doing this DIY you should take a look at our Black Walnut DIY options. You get the wood pieces unfinished and then apply the oil yourself which saves maaajor $$. If you follow our finishing instructions and use the Waterlox products we recommend it will be waterproof and food safe. Daily maintenance is just like granite - any mild detergents (or just vinegar mixed with water!) but NO ammonia or bleach. Very simple.

It looks like that counter is the perfect size to replace with butcher block. You don't necessarily need to stain the butcher block counter to match the cabinets. Most of our customers who have lighter cabinets tend to get a darker color wood or vice versa.
