Laying a stone and moss path

Do the stones go directly on the soil or do you still put screening and sand etc?

Thanks for the question. When we do a stepper path like this, we still prepare a compacted sub base and then an inch or so of stone dust directly below the steppers. The stones are much less likely to move around if they have a properly prepared base.

did you use irish moss between the steppers? how does it hold up in heavy shade?

We use a base material that is a mix of different sizes of crushed stone and stone dust, which compacts well but still allows water to percolate.

That is Irish Moss in between the steppers and it is doing really well in the shade so far.

I live in Miami, Florida and wondering if your method for prepping the ground would work here. Prior to placing the crushed stone and stone dust base did you place a weed mat to prevent weeds from coming through? Or is this not necessary? Thanks!

Our ground preparation method should work in Miami. We don't put down a weed mat, you're more likely to have weeds grow in the joints than come up from a foot underground, in my experience.
