In answer to your question regarding color: you can pick and choose what colors in your artwork you want to sprinkle around the room. The pillows suggested would be a good start. You can bring in some of the other colors in vases, plants, draperies, etc. Don't be afraid to experiment. As far as your rug size . . . I am only guessing, but if the one in the picture is 5 x 7, you will be looking at something roughly 8 ft sq. or larger for this space. The rug will define the seating area and give you a better idea where to place the chairs.

leestep, I have no idea how big those candle holders are, so, no, I can't really do that. Put up your new mantel, then start a new dilemma for this room if you want help accessorizing the fireplace.

Right now I'm more concerned that you improve the placement of your chairs in the other room. Design is not about filling space; it's about making a room function in an aesthetically pleasing way.

LOL, you are funny. I'll see how I could adjust the chairs, but even that pic looks weird. It's hard to get the whole room in the picture. It's not like I can stand back near the couch and get the whole room, but will try.

Ok, I love warm colors, so adding color would look great. That said, an earlier suggestion said to go with white or cream accessories. I really like that idea. I think it would look great with your dark coffee table. It would also make the furniture color look richer. Plus the colors would balance each other so the artwork stands out. And you might be able to keep your existing rug. Try having the sofas face one another.

@leslie, moving the chairs around per everyone's request may not look right. The room isn't that big and positioning the chairs in front of the sofa or at the sides would make the room look smaller. When taking pictures the room size isn't always displayed accurately. However, I get everyone's point that they should be defined for conversational piece, but if no one ever sits in there that's the least of my concerns, but for experimentation I'll see if the pieces can be arranged a different way to give everyone an idea of the space I'm working with.

Based on the layout of the room I can't take a picture that will display the entire room. Where the single chair in the corner is I had to chairs in that corner before. However, these chairs are bigger then the previous ones so it looks crammed.

One more thing for the whites. Go with the creamy white curtain that have just a bit of weight and a pattern. I've seen some at Bed Bath and Beyond that are reasonably priced especially with coupons. Then paint one wall in a chola te b

Chocolate brown. It would add some depth and pull it all together especially with your color filled art.

leestep, we don't need to see the whole room at once. Stand at each wall and take a photo of the opposite wall so we can see the room from all four vantage points.

And it's a misconception that putting all the furniture against the walls and far away from each other makes a room look bigger. Your empty space belongs around the outside of the furniture grouping, not in the middle.

@grover, I wasn't under the assumption that furniture far away would look bigger, the room is a little weird. However, I'll display corner to corner photos shortly.

Then you can assist me with your app and my candle holders in the other room. LOL, I need a visual for my candle holders and your app would help. There from pier one if you need to download it to your computer. LOL, thanking you in advance.

Thanks for the extra pics. I've been looking at your living room all this time and thinking that one chair next to the sofa was a loveseat. Now I see it's a chair. That means you can pull the other chair and its table out of the corner as shown below. The now-empty corner could get a plant, or your big floor vase, or just some art on the wall.

Here are your candleholders next to the fireplace. They are approximately to scale (I counted the bricks), and they're big.

@grover, the chairs are big, so moving them side by side as your pic it wouldn't work. That set is from pier one if you want to use it for your app.

I forgot to say, the candle holders are big, but the smallest one measures about 43H and the taller one about 52H, the tall on would be two inches over mantel.

Just discovered your post, haven't read everything … has anyone suggested a round rug for your main seating area? the right-angle point seems distracting to me. Beautiful floor, nice home.

@barbara, nope, no suggestions on a round rug. I think for the most part I'm going to stick with a shag/sisal neutral color rug like ivory or cream. I'm not even sure how a round rug would look.

Round rug, this one only 4' diameter, but they come super-sized as well.

Shags and sisal rugs come in round as well, in many colors. Can any of contributing professionals comment pro or con? (My rug is in a heavily traveled area, so I chose a patterned wool).

Oh, ok@ Barbara. I think I'll stick with square. A cream/ivory/neutral shouldn't be hard to find. I'm going to leave the room as is and accessorize from the suggestions given. I'm still trying to find pillows that will work.

Could you place the 2 chairs beside each other where the sofa is, and place the sofa facing them, with the sofa back towards the hallway with the staircase? I think this would be an attractive grouping. Your traffic path would be around the sofa, where you now have the chair in the corner. Pull the chairs at least 6 inches away from the wall. This conversation grouping doesn't need to be centered on the wall where you now have the art - it can be closer to the windows. If that big painting still looks best on that wall, it can be centered on the conversation grouping.

When rearranging furniture (and I move mine around a lot) I remove the end tables, rugs etc from the room, and even take the art away. Start with the big seating pieces and don't be afraid to put them in an odd configuration. It may just work. You don't need end tables beside every chair, and you may not need both of them. Art gets hung last.

I guess I am a bit of a circle freak - I look forward to seeing how nice all this looks when you have it just the way you want! Enjoy!

@parim, i'm not sure how that would look, but i'm going to leave it as is. I found a nice 7x7 cream shag rug and i'll add my pillows.

On another note, I like posting my rooms for suggestions, because people tend to think of ideas you wouldn't think of or some may be off the wall, but ultimately a home owner will always go with the look they feel is best. Sometimes, i second guess myself on a lot, but mainly with accessorizing. My neighbor, whos hobby is designing, assist me a lot, but i don't like bugging her all the time, so in the mean time, I reach out to my fellow folks on here. I have gotten great suggestions, but my main living room is set up a little weird. I thank everyone for there great suggestions, when it's completed I will repost. I have two other rooms that need accessorizing as well and will post those for other great ideas.

@groveraxel, yippee, I have your thumbs up. Should I do two accent pillows or leave the one? I need to get the other rust pillows. I told the lady at pier one I wanted to try the combo out first.

The painting goes quite close to the ceiling. Would it look better turned on its side, and hung just a bit lower? And maybe the sofa could be pulled away from the wall a few inches?

@partim, the painting is 48x48, so no matter which way it's turned it would look the same.

leestep, one accent pillow, I think. If you want to add one more pillow, try replacing the beige pillow on the far right of the sofa with a solid chocolate brown. That will balance the vase on the other side. You might even do a little texture, but keep it simple so the connection between the art and the accent pillow remains focal.

@groveraxel, they beige pillows are there temporarily. I'm going to add the rust color pillow to the right side and on the chairs. Do you think I should do that? And that's all I was going to do as far as pillows.

Can I get opinions on whether or not I should do drapes or go with blinds. Not the blinds that's on there now, but better ones of course.

Groveraxel, back to this room. I removed the accent pillows I had on the couch. To me, they were blending in with the wall art too much. However, I'm stuck on weather I should do drapes/ better blinds in this room. If drapes what color? Is the table center piece ok? If not, can you suggest something else.

Hubby likes the rug we have, he says to him, it brightens up the room, so he asked me not to change it.

IMO, the room looks great. I would put back the lumbar pillows; the sofa looks a bit flat without them. I like your current drapes. If you want better blinds, go for it. If you don't need them, your windows can do without.

There are a couple of simple things I would do and you'll achieve perfection. Lower the art a couple of inches so there's more space at the top than at the bottom. You could use a taller lamp. And I'd replace the floor vase with something taller and narrower for better balance. But please don't put a bunch of sticks in it and call it a day.

Hello, Design Eye, I hope your not talking about the photo that started this thread, because I have posted a new pictures since then, which are also posted on the thread. There are pics where I had blue tape to measure out my space to purchase a new rug that fits the space.

If your looking at the current photo, I'm going to say it's the picture. Posting pics on here doesn't always show the true dimensions of a room.
