I'm tired of the wood. Any suggestions? Want it brighter...

Not pot lights - a chandy - a more eclectic chandelier will give the opportunity to give the feeling you want to impart . . something black perhaps since that is working for you . .

I was drawn to the dark tan with the ikats. Chevrons and dark tan next. (maybe a tan but a few shades lighter?) but any of the cream combos are still in my running. I'm not a fan of grommets in any drape, but that is purely my opinion. I think you would like any of the curtains better with exposed dark rings on the dark rod. Then, pair all that with a dark metal chandelier? And I like the dark wax finish that libradesign posted. Looks great.

What's your opinion on the blacks? Sheers anyone?

I liked the chevron with the dark tan. Looks very fresh and relaxing. I found the ikats too busy. No to the black chairs.

I know what it is about the Ikat, that is putting me off, pattern is too small in between the large.

The logs are very solid, so it is sort of like working in a room with a leather sofa - sheers just don't have enough visual weight for me. You need substantial things. I like the dark tan covers because they bridge the light tones (newly painted china cabinet) and the dark wood by presenting a mid tone that isn't the logs. .. I do think you could do a dramatic dark chandelier . . I would select bronze, not black, but I'm not looking around the whole space .. .

ok painted the chairs...stone hearth by (BM)...not sure

Maybe I should have color matched the tan in he curtains...

    almost should be darker...right??

DH might not be happy if we need to repaint!!

painted the chairs BM stone hearth...not quite right I don't think!

    Any thoughts??

I think I should have color matched the dark in the curtains

    sorry...I posted all this twice!

Elaine, they look so much better than the parsons chairs and just so much better over all than when you started. When I look at stone hearth color on the BM site, it looks like it should work. Now, in your spare time ... I would just add a bit of the brown glaze on the white cabinet, and it should blend together very well. If you think it needs to be darker ... is it lighter than the tones in the curtains? How are the chairs with any of the other curtain options you had tried? Better match?

If possible, open the shade and give us a daylight picture with the overhead off too.

    :-)

Hi add a light blind of some description on the window. The light fixture could be replaced. Your home is stunning. If budget permits, enlarge the window. A cheery rug will do wonders for this room. I think that the side panels on the window weigh the room down. Definitely lime the lighter colours in the room.

lessismoore...had trouble sleeping last night over the chairs..lol...Yes what the problem is... is that I wanted the dark tone in the curtain and its not a match to that..it seems off...almost looks purple.ish...I did get the idea of changing the curtains...might be easier than repainting.

I am going to do the dark wax on the cabinet...was waiting for my daughter to do it but maybe I'll just try myself...maybe I could dark wax the chairs too...thanks for your input

laurienordin...thanks for the advice..I am looking for a light fixture...I brought one of those big charcoal colored drum looking lights home from Ikea...it was good but it blocked my view of the lake so I returned it...I'm looking for something on the more industrial look...but I think my light colored chairs turned my room into country instead of more RH.

Been thinking about adding a second window on the log side of the room...it would be a lake view...so that would be awesome

less...I'll try and take a daytime pic but they usually can't get a good pic in the day light

You would have to stand on the window side of the room or you would be shooting directly into the light (the window) and then, the whole room would be underexposed. Try standing in a corner or to one side of the room. We won't get a sense of the whole room, like when you shoot from the kitchen, but at least we can get a more exact idea of the colors, especially of the chairs? If the chairs are really putting out a purple undertone ... maybe you need a second coat? See how they look with some of the other drape materials. You might find a better match. Good luck. I don't think they look too country.

    Elaine,

the inspiration chair you posted from pintrest may 16 is the right idea . . i do think you would be happier with a darker chair tone . . you might try bm taos taupe or . . wait for the daughter and make a project of dark waxing everything .. the spindles and curves will be more interesting with a waxing treatment . definitely more shabby chic as you began wanting . .. this is all in the right direction - consider adding some art that mixes the neutrals with some blue grays to carry those tones from your fireplace stone into this space . . . another window would be a bonus except for those chilly winter nights .. you are making great progress.

Elaine - you could also try a glaze on the chairs instead of repainting (if you don't want to do the dark wax). I use a formula of 3 parts glaze, one part water, and enough water to thin it out quite a bit. See Pinterest for ideas. I am loving this room! Great job!

I would suggest getting a rug like mentioned above and live with the chairs for a little bit. If you want to go darker try a glaze. That way it's not as much work and it will still give you a darker looking piece. It's looking really nice!

thanks everyone...I hung the ikat curtain back up and its probably better than the chevron. I also ordered some gray chevron that I'm waiting to try.

The tones in the ikat are closer to the chair color. I think I'm going to change out the curtains and dark waxing the furniture before repainting if I do repaint.

Not sure about getting a rug...I've got lots of grandkids and it might be too much maintenance

I'll try a pic like you suggested ...thanks

Got some new curtains yesterday. Having trouble getting a good pic. What do u think?

The gray is definitely better than the tan ones but they are too short. Lower the rod (sorry didn't read all comments)

Yes. I realize they are too short. Just hung them up for color etc

I dark waxed this chair top. Do u think it goes with the curtain ok?

If you can't return the curtains for a longer length, you could add a band of solid grey (are they grey?) to the bottom instead of lowering the rod.

Love the curtains and the dark wax on the chairs!!
    Flipped.

Karen...flipped...does that mean you like them...lol? I think I'm liking them too.

I'm sure I can get them longer length

Not sure on the curtains, but the chair looks great :-) Last pic of whole room looks like it is coming together in spite of bumps in the road. I would like any curtains better with a rod and dark rings showing. I do think you will need some black in the room, not tons, but for accent, and that is a good way to start; with the rod and rings. Maybe a black table runner? I think a lantern styled lamp (so it is see through) with dark metal would look "RH" ish :-)

    Like this one ...

Yes I like them! "Flipped" just meant that I edited your photo so it is upright. Sorry for the confusion!

Haha. I knew you'd say that about the curtains. I was going to put the other ones on rings but was waiting to get the rings. DD had some she was going to give me. I got the curtains from sears but they only come in this style

Do u like the dark wax in the chairs?

Yes, yes on the dark wax on the chairs! I did some color adjusting as I don't think your room is "as" red as it appears in the pix. Added some boxwood in gray stone as a bit of decor. (Could use maybe two white candles to break that up ...) Looking good.
Yes, I'm the last person on earth to be a hold out on the grommets. I'm looking for new LR drapes and getting very frustrated by my

    choices ...

Lessismore - ^ that looks fantastic!!
Elaine - just look at the difference!! Amazing!

A light glaze on the white furniture would be awesome. They are too stark against the wood walls. The glaze will just lightly tie in the looks.

wow...it is amazing...it seems its just little by little but when I look back I've come a long way...

less...thanks for putting the light in there and I love the table decor

I was going to bring this light home next

Found a few rings to try. Like it.

Yes! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!! It has been a huge change

I think the light you picked might look amazing. But, if you find you are not happy with it, here is the one I used (good price too!) But in truth, you might need two.

Thanks. I love the light. Thanks for the link. I think I'm going to order it

Less...do you think you could photo shop a window in the log wall for me so I can see what that would look like? Thanks

    last modified: 11 years ago

Will do. You mean a bigger window than the one you have? Not on a different wall or ??? Any specific style?

I think she means the right wall which I always assumed was common to the other living space but may not be . .

was wondering...maybe I should move the china cabinet to the other wall and hang a huge (Almost floor to ceiling) mirror opposite it. It would reflect the lake and trees. was trying to get hubby to install a window but that's not going to happen. any suggestions on this idea??

I was trying to convince DH to put a window in the wall opposite the china cabinet as it faces the lake

    Check out these ideas
for a window treatment that could help transform the space.

Hmmm. So moving china hutch to the right (as we view it here) and BIG mirror where hutch was. Should brighten the space, make it appear larger, but depending on where you are in room, it could look just like two china hutches? I'm assuming the "view" you want to reflect is out the existing window. And it would be wonderful if you could get a nice french door installed in that wall instead. Fingers crossed.
