Problems with Innermost

My wife and I decided to remodel our kitchen using Home Depot’s Innermost cabinet line. The in-store display appeared of good quality construction and the frameless cabinets offered extra space. We worked slowly with a designer who was new at Home Depot. Upon closing our order, the Specialty Sales Manager also confirmed important items, like we had been responsible for our own measurements and were therefore liable for that, that we ordered a Maple wood cabinet and a painted finish, and we signed paperwork on these items. He also warned us to inspect the cabinets upon delivery and let Home Depot know if we had any problems and “they would take care of us”.
The nightmare…
3 cabinets were not delivered (1 on backorder randomly and 2 somehow got lost, we still don’t know where they are). 1 decorative end panel for our island was the wrong door style (their fault).
The rest of our cabinets… every single cabinet arrived in poor quality with multiple issues. Every cabinet had some level of edge banding that was either peeling off, chipped, or you could see the seam interface of two pieces. There was glue residue on the surface of the finished end cabinets and the interior shelving, along with glue globs oozing out seams that should have been wiped away before hardening. Several cabinets had large cracks down the major supporting side panels. Gaps or spaces between joints that were so large they did not meet cabinet code construction requirements. On several cabinets it was noticeable that repairs had been made, and the touch-up paint was poorly applied and did not match completely. The melamine shelves had chips in them. One of the large pantry doors was not fully painted around the edges… The list of problems was endless.
We contacted Home Depot as we wanted to return the cabinets. Home Depot put us in touch with Inntermost (Elkay). After several walk-throughs Inntermost offered to rebuild our entire order. After we talked to their plant manager, we did not find this acceptable. Each cabinet had 2-3 inspections stickers stamping approval of the quality of construction. If this had been 1 or 2 cabinets, sure-fix it. But with every cabinet, we have no doubt after a 3 week rebuild, we would be in the same place with more poor quality cabinets.
We called Home Depot corporate to try to return the cabinets. Eventually they offered for us to return the cabinets… for a 40% restocking fee!!! Im getting absolutely no where with Home Depot or Innermost. They all say they want us "to be happy with our cabinets".... but what they really mean is they only want us to be happy as long as they can keep our money!

Anyone else have huge problems with cabinet orders? What did you do to resolve it? Check out my pictures at http://www.houzz.com/projects/515687/Innermost-Kitchen-Disaster

I too have an Innermost nightmare.
The cabinets we ordered were Maple, Amaretto, Frameless slab. They came in on Feb. 8 2016. so we decided to put them in the next weekend. My husband is a contractor so it was easy..right?
They were in good shape, none were damaged badly. Except the wood finish did not match. We would have two drawers perfect and one lighter with blotch irregularities. Then, one drawer brackets were put on wrong, backwards.
Doors and and drawers mismatched. and the trim was way off color.
so then it took Innermost 2 weeks to get out here to inspect. They said they would remake the mismatched items. I had to ask for a list indicating all the items they were going to repair or remake. They sent the list, but missed 3 of the items. Then they said that could NOT guarantee that they could match them. so we complained and said " what is the point if you can not guarantee this" Finally the region rep called us from Georgia. She insisted we give them a sample to match, so they had Home depot's rep come by and pick it up. Innermost acted like they were doing us a favor. then they said it would be 3 more weeks. It came last week and the trim and large panel by the fridge did not match at all. Looked like a shinier finish too. I was so frustrated, I just sat and cried. It takes a lot for me to cry. But I was so angry and frustrated. I can not take living like pigs anymore. Our dishwasher is in our living room. Our range is in our dining room and we have not cooked a meal for 6 weeks on a stovetop. I have a small house and everything is in boxes in my living room. All of the cabinets are in the garage because we can't install them until the whole order is correct. Now we have sent Innermost an ultimatum. " if you can't give us the new pieces that match exactly in 2 weeks, you can come and pick it all up.. We will get a refund and get someone else to make them."

Home Depot has been Great. Very helpful and calls us right back.
their measure guys did mismeasure creating another set of problems altogether.
but they refunded us the measure fee and are helping us with the issues that have arised.

I am a remodeling contractor. I order INNERMOST cabinets for my kitchen through Home Depot... nothing but problems! and Innermost refuses to make good on anything. They have attempted several times to get my order right... and failed utterly... I don't know who they have working in their factory, but those asshats should be working at a fastfood joint... not in a cabinet factory! Home depot isn't much help either... they worked with me until today when I demanded a compensation for our gross inconvenience or a full refund. They suddenly disappeared and have nothing to say any more. They are contracting in California, but seem to think that they are not subject to contract law here. ELKAY is the parent company for Innermost. I highly suggest that no one do business with any of the elkay companies... especially innermost!!!

We used HD Cabs only one when a client insisted. They were warped & wouldnt line up, causing installations delays. From that point we refuse to install cabs from a big box. It ends up being more in labor to install to the client with an inferior product. We also don't buy wood from there. And hubby insists that even DeWalt is subpar there.

Thank you for posting this. We just attended a kitchen expo at HD. I really didn't want to do my kitchen with them but my mother is. After reading all of this we will Def go with my first instinct and stick w a local kitchen cabinet guy who did a great job last time at our old house. A friend of mine used to be in corporate at home depot. She told me at one point they took back dead christmas trees....yet fight with consumers about broken, irregular or moldy cabinents? I don't have time with that stress and would rather help the local mom and pop shop. Thank you all for the insight and I hope all of your problems were resolved.

Wow, I'm really glad that I read the comments. Yesterday I was at HD looking at cabinets and fell in love with the beautiful sage green Innermost cabinets. But after reading all of the comments I will not purchase these cabinets no matter how much I love them...

I am a contractor in Chino Hills CA. I have been reading through these comments. We bought Innermost Cabinets through Home Depot here near us, and we have had nothing but trouble. As for the Carmel Home Depot, you may be good about customer service where you are, but we had nothing but trouble with ours here. They even went so far as to verbally state that they were going to violate California trade law. They refused to give us a return and full refund. Under both state and federal law, they are required to do these things immediately, with no restocking fee, if the cabinets were delivered in damaged or unusable condition, or if they were not built correctly the first time, etc. They flatly said they would not! We have been 5 months now with now with no kitchen. They have attempted to have our cabinets remade 3 times now, and still Innermost cannot get them done correctly. And just this morning as we inspected a few of the cabinets that had come in good order, we found that the veneers are now starting to peel from the doors and drawer fronts! This is beyond ridiculous. We finally had to get the Better Business Bureau involved before they would agree to obey the law. My very strong suggestion is that no one ever use Innermost... EVER! Their quality control is nonexistent. And their materials and workmanship are worse than a kindergarten child!

I'm in the middle of the worst kitchen remodel with Home Depot and Innermost cabinets. Currently I'm on my third reorder. The quality is horrible. Warped...scratched...dented and exposed glue issues. Not to mention missing pieces.

We just finally had to cancel and demand a refund on our job... After the third reorder attempt and they still couldn't get it right! To add to the list, we also found some of our cabinets with the veneer peeling!

I am so glad I decided to research this brand before signing on the dotted line yesterday! We spent 3 hours designing our new kitchen in white with InnerMost cabinets at HD. It was going to cost approx. $12,000 and we heard all the same comments about all plywood, lifetime guarantee on the finish etc. etc. After reading all these comments I am definitely not going to purchase these cabinets. You saved me I'm quite sure, thanks so much. I am going to stick to a tried and true brand

Clark French...did you have any cabinets installed before you canceled your order and got a refund? Im in Atlanta and working with the corporate office at this point.

I had my InnerMost white slab cabs. installed last year.

No issue other than HD called me while we were waiting for the cabs. to come in and said they no longer use the company that came out my measure my kitchen, and the new company they're now using wants to do it (again.)

Turns out, the initial measurements was wrong. We needed one cabinet to be larger. That set us back a few weeks.

Other than that, no problems at all.

We have had the same issues with innermost doing our kitchen. &5 months later and a boat load of threats and screaming, Home Depot finally agreed to a full refund and return. If your cabinets come in damaged, or otherwise unusable condition, they cannot legally deans a restocking fee at all. The first thing to do is contact the Atlanta better business bureau and file a complaint. Then contact th HD corporate resolution center and talk with a girl named Tiffany. She has been the most helpful. What state are you living in?

Our Innermost cabinets are ready to be installed and are in perfect condition. However, the person who unboxed and inspected our cabinets told me that the workers at Innermost are paid by the piece, so boxing up defective pieces and shipping them off to the buyer is not their problem, since they get paid for what goes out the door. This may be the root of many problems.

Thanks for posting this. Anytime cabinet quality is an issue, work towards getting a representative from the cabinet company out to look at the job. They can make decisions on what is to be done. Home Depot is following corporate guidelines, but you definately shouldn't settle for this type of quality. Best of luck.

Agree RG Miller. I sold a $22,000 Kraftmaid kitchen, and the customer was very dissatisfied with the quality of the finish. Brought several doors to the store, and I and my store manager agreed, not acceptable. My SM went up the chain (above my rep) at Kraftmaid, but they would not agree to re-make the cabinets, so our store refunded the entire kitchen with no re-stock fee, of course.

I realize I am probably going to expose myself to an astronomical amount of venom here, but when i saw this discussion, I just couldn't ignore it. I work in the Culver In. plant where Innermost is made. As a lifelong woodworker, I am both saddened and ashamed of the substandard products and problems all of you have encountered.

Just an update to my on going kitchen remodel with InnerMost Cabinets. Over 5 months now and they still havent gotten it right. Im working with Home Depot corporate...written the Better Business Bureau and had a Rep visit my home. So over it.

Spenney - Unfortunately I know exactly how you feel. It was miserable. Unfortunately HD and innermost have the upper hand as you already paid for the cabinets. They can squeeze you like they tried to squeeze me. Have you gotten you credit card company involved to reject the charge? Home Depot corporate didn't do anything for me but as soon as we got American Express involved, the pieces started to move.

@Joann Spencer. I am sure there are other very good workers at Home Depot. Unfortunately, when there are lots of stores nationwide you will get some stores with good managers, and some stores with poor managers. I do not doubt that some folks received a good product. However, my pictures do not lie or exaggerate the truth. I'm sure if any of your customers received the quality that I did, they would come back to you screaming. As evidenced by this thread where folks are complaining about the same QA/QC issues 2 years later, some mistakes are not being corrected and being shipped to HD customers. That should be a huge red flag to potential customers.

I'm confused as to how innermost can keep winning Houzz annual Customer satisfaction awards when they have issues like this. I'm wondering if the issues here are just a small percentage of overall customers. Not downplaying the problems expressed here but people with issues make more effort to complain online than satisfied customers. I'm interested in their cabinets but completely confused as to who to believe. Are 80% happy 20% unhappy or vice versa?

  • PRO

One thing I learned is that they have problems with about 50% of their orders, but they will rectify as many as possible, which in turn quiets the customers. While I am sure that they have successes, I wouldn't want to bet on whether yours might be one of the good ones. It's just not worth it for the potential problems, because if you do have problems, they will be very difficult and innermost isNOT particularly sympathetic nor helpful. There are many other options which are simply better.

When I decided not to purchase these cabinets after everything I had read, My contractor said the manager of the cabinet department in our Home Depot told him he has had more problems with this manufacturer than all the others they carry combined. (My contractor has worked with this gentlemen for over 10 years.) When I asked my contractor why this same gentlemen didn't discourage me from buying them when I said I wanted them his answer was the size of the sale!

I was amazed to read this about Innermost. I loved the idea of 13" wall cabinets as I have had problems with over sized plates. Forty years ago, we used Kings Oak by Quakermaid and they had 13 inch wall cabinets. Still in my parents home. Im also surprised that this is an Elkay company, as Elkay is always been associated with quality and long lasting products. We have used thier Lustertone sinks of 18Ga before. I dont think I would further be interested in Innermost cabinets after reading this. Sounds like poor quality and horrible customer relations. I would contact Elkay corporation if I were you. I have had problems with HD and Whirlpool, both are not the companies that they used to be or portray themselves as quality and value any longer. Its all the bottom line and not quality. Why jobs are leaving US and quality is lousy in all industries.

    Best of luck, dj

I visited a HD in my area this week and noticed that they are in the process of discontinuing the Innermost brand (their most 'high end', someone told me). I asked a HD employee in the cabinet area for the reason behind the decision but wasn't given on.

I've also heard that as of November, HD is discontinuing the Innermost brand.

We got a lot of semi-custom cabinets from Innermost and have been happy with them thus far. There are a few minor issues (too-weak hinge used on a bi-fold lifting door, one cabinet missing end finish), but our HD designer has been helping us get corrections for all of these items. Innermost has also provided us with a few extra rollout shelves for the tall spice rack and wide/tall pantry.

Some mistakes may be due to HD's design software, especially w/r/t end pieces or specific areas of filler/finish.

We were missing or had the wrong color toe kicks (we have wooden uppers and painted lowers), and the corner lazy Susan doors were hinged on the wrong side (again, this was likely due to HD design software defects).

The main problem is that it does take a while for Innermost/Elkay to actually ship the missing items.

yes, I heard they discontinued them in July. But, I never, as a hd designer, had an issue with them, loved their cabinets it was my favorite brand. the toe kick color was probably a designer error, unless it was just not sent. I like the colors of your cabinets.

With a mix of comments coming in about this, I will say the following: As with any company, there will be successes as well as failures. As such, not everything Innermost has produced is going to be bad. However, from what I have been able to learn, Innermost has an extremely high failure rate. In this case they have problems with more than 50% of their orders. These are problems which could have been easily avoided or easily dealt with, but their business model is very poor at best. They simply do not provide the quality of manufacturing and customer service that they claim to do. So, do they do things right...? Sometimes. But they do just as much wrong. No company can sustain itself if they have this high a failure rate. And frankly, so far in my experience, I have heard far more bad than good about them. To top it off, I found a very good private custom cabinet contractor who built a fully customized set of kitchen cabinets for me for 30% less than Innermost's crappy limited/semi custom cabinets. Innermost only offered a few very limited options and the cost was $15000. The private contractor gave me anything and everything I wanted, and I paid only $9000. Better cabinets and better service with full customization for a lot less??? It's a no brainer. And the worst of it was that Innermost would take responsibility for their mistakes. For any issues we had with the private contractor... Immediate response and remedy. Again... No brainer. Innermost should just close up shop and give up.

We had our Innermost cabinets installed in November of 2014. You can see in the pictures that their painting process is crap! I only clean with Luke warm soapy water. Light on soap. It's so disappointing that we spent so much money about $14,000 and this is the quality. HORRIBLE
  • 8 years ago

We had a complete kitchen redo using Innermost cabinetry which is owned by Elkay. The first problem we had was the cabinet beside the microwave was the wrong size, the replacement was damaged when we received it. Third time was a charm. The cabinet/pantry that runs along/above the refrigerator was the wrong size. After some haggling it was corrected. I loved my cabinet when all was said and done, they were exactly what I wanted. I made Thanksgiving dinner and all the veneer next to the oven shrank. The veneer is red with blond wood underneath so it's VERY noticeable. Elkay said that since we didn't install a heat shield (I really don't know what that is) they wouldn't honor the warranty. DON'T USE ELKAY PRODUCTS, THEY DON'T STAND BEHIND THEM AND THEY DON'T HONOR THEIR WARRANTY!

I wish I saw all these reviews on Innermost Cabinets and Home Depot. The quality on this Bamboo is not good. The spice draw is cracked, we replaced several cabinets but it was not innermost that was the worst-it was our Contractor and Home Depot. The name of the contractor is Tracy Barnett of Barnett Building. What a horrible install and bad business. Overcharged and I was an acquaintance so that is what I get for using someone I know who was also used through Home Depot. They said they would make sure it was perfect. Not try. The installers broke a cabinet and put upside down on one. Innermost did not send correct ones but actually did replace needed cabinets. Home Depot wanted nothing to do with it anymore and Innermost would not return my calls or emails. I spent $30,000 between cabinets and contractor fees and still not happy. Our doors do not close properly. They did not put finishes on it. There are spaces and cracks inside. Too much to type. DO NOT USE TRACY BARNETT BARNETT BUILDING IN TUCSON ARIZONA and Go somewhere else other than Home Depot. Our Home Depot Rep Mary was not helpful at all.

That’s great! Count yourself as fortunate. Not all products from Innermost are going to be bad, however, a large number normally are poorly made. In fact, they have a massively greater number of problems than almost any other company. In your cSe, longevity is going to be your concern. You just have to hope a pray that the cabinets don’t start falling apart, or have finish problems, or warping problems, etc. hopefully you won’t have any issues, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

You also have to factor in the installer. An experienced installer can fix issues where others make them worse by just screwing them in. If a cabinet is poorly made They take more work to install but we live in a use a impact driver and slap them in world. Impact drivers destroy more cabinets then you can imagine. Sounds crazy? You have a couple hundred ftlbs of force at your fingertips. Add to that a poorly made cabinet and when the installer hits that button you have a warped racked cabinet.

Everything tase days is made to be profitable with quality second and you can that Toyota for that. These Cos force suppliers to cheapen every single component. Ikea seams to be one of the few that actually makes it work.

Give the customer that wow look and cheapen the product to squeeze every penny out of it.

We had a great experience with Innermost cabinets and their customer care team. We installed in April 2016 and have had zero problems since installation. We had an experienced installer. Did we have some issues with a few cabinets that came in the wrong size? Yes, of course, but what company doesn't have these issues (i.e. cabinets damaged during shipping, size 1/2 inch off specs, etc.). That is to be expected when you have a very large kitchen, wet bar and laundry room renovation with a very large number of cabinets ($30,000 worth) ordered. We had a great design consultant at Home Depot who met with us often to ensure we had the specs perfect. He was amazing. Home Depot was quick to resolve any issues and even got their senior manager involved to insure that the project specs were correct and to resolve any problems. We had two cabinet fronts for dishwasher and spice rack that came in slightly off in its dimension. We had an oven cabinet that the cutouts for the two wall ovens came were incorrect. Only other cabinet that was wrong was a base cabinet to the right of the stove whose dimensions were incorrect - that was a design mistake, not a Innermost Cabinet error.. Understand we had over 30 base and wall cabinets, dishwasher front and a large hood installed to accommodate the 6 burner Wolf oven and cooktop. Some of the cabinets had glass fronts (ones stacked on top of other wall cabinets and wall cabinets on wet bar. Not one glass front was cracked or chipped. Do you know that the sales representative from Innermost even came to our house to personally manage the issues even after Home Depot contacted them. They went over and above what we expected from a customer care standpoint. Any time I have called since with a question, they have been there to answer them. There was not a single cabinet that came in damaged. They have not chipped, scratched since installation, nor are they showing any wear. We use warm water with dishwashing detergent, wipe and dry. We were very happy with our purchase and our installation. We were are very happy with our completed project. Pictures do not reflect laundry room cabinets.

That’s wonderful to hear. A a contractor, I am always pleased to hear that installations go well and clients are happy. but, I have been in the business for 45+ years as a contractor and designer. Isnd yes, every company has the occasional issue. However, Innermost has an inordinately high occurrence of problems. So much so that they don’t even bother commenting or defending themselves any longer. The number of issues they have far out number their successes. I’m very happy that your job went well, but your’s is the exception, not the rule.

I have never had a problem with Innermost. And, I have used them a lot. But, you must know how to order and if not than you are out of luck. A lot of firms (commercial where I am from) require a lot more information on the order. Finished backs, right handed finish, left side not finished. Why is this done to save money for the client.

no sense putting veneer to attach to another cabinet unless it is the end.

I have to go with poor ordering on what I see here, bad wrapping for what I see for shipping and really awful handling when delivering.

Stacking up, laying against product, no blankets, I would be ballistic at my crew.

The most important part of any project be it a small guest bathroom to 15 floors is the first part.

Measure correctly, which means top of wall middle and bottom.

Remove the amount of space if you are leaving a base in place, or stop the base before the cabinet. but get it right.

Order correctly and then check the order again.

Send your drawings to the factory for a check on order, and if they miss something let them know they will be charged, they will help you. They want a good job.

There is not a person out there who does not make mistakes the two things I believe you must do is a . Take ownership of the error and replace the product. Yes, go in your pocket.

    B. Be on site before, during every meeting, walls move back because of something found or a change. Coulmns do not disappear off a drawing, though I have had someone erase them.

Be on site at every meeting and on your own walk through when no ne knows you are coming.

I am so sad you had this problem, call the Admin to the President and they will help you.
