If you want to play with colors most of the major paint brands have a tool on their site that allows you to upload a photo of your room and change the color. Beware that the color on your screen will not be exactly the same but it will help you pick a shade, mood and general color. From there you can get some paint samples and see what they look like on your wall. We painted one room twice because we decided to not try samples.

I vote to keep it as is and to then lighten up the space with choice of furniture and accessories- less of the dark wood. For ex, switch out dark frames for modern, white ones for a fresh look. If it is not possible to remove some of the darker furniture, my second choice would be white trim. I love black trim but don't think it would go as well with your current decor. The wood looks really beautiful in the pics.

Some options:
1. trim white ok, looks like it's stained/lacquered. That will be a hefty job that would probably turn into a complete repaint of all surfaces.
2. You don't have a lot of wall showing and most of your wall hangings are brown/dark toned. Maybe, removing some to open some wall surface might be enough, then go with option 3.
3.paint your walls a lighter color.
4. Lighter colored accents. Like a runner rug, pillows, drapes, picture frames, etc.
