This doesn't exactly address your question, but have you considered moving the tv to the space left of the fireplace and aligning the top of it with the top of the fireplace mass? The tv might end up at a more pleasing viewing height from a seated position, and it'll give you a chance to create an interesting horizontal composition spanning across the entire wall. If you study it and like it, then the next consideration might be a unifying background material across the entire horizontal area (on both sides of the fireplace).

There are so many large tiles that would work on entire wall. One has a wave effect in tile. Others are a woven look. Find something interesting. It's not cheap, but worth the price. Google to find tile stores that carry this in your area.

I would do the entire wall around the fireplace.

i love this fireplace in white.......it is interesting design wise and not typical, if you want to do something "not like the others"... if you are using tile, make sure you consider any other electrical or lighting needs you may have before installing.

or you could get another look with wooden panels that is very contemporary, but beautiful as well.

The type of tile that you choose will modify how you apply it to the wall. You need to think about the scale of pattern (if there is one) among other things.

Are there any tiles you had in mind yet? MPoulsom had some interesting ideas.

I just did a bathroom with a mix of thassos select A polished marble @ 24x12 (floor) and the shower and accent wall in honed thassos, cut 3/8" x 2-1/2" in a herringbone pattern. It's really cool, I think ... and if you did the wall in a polished, pure white marble and the fireplace in a complementary herringbone, I think you'd have something remarkable. This pic of the herringbone will give you the idea.
