I bet swapping out the gold faceplate for something different would make a huge, huge difference.

My Mom spray painted her old gold faceplate black & it made a huge difference. It won't last forever but it's a low cost quick fix. The and replacing the green tile would make a huge impact.

I spray painted my gold faceplate and it made a world of difference. It was really easy to do. Now to figure out how to cover the marble!

You could remove the fitted fire screen and use a standing screen in wrought iron. Mine is large enough to cover most of the surround.

Is that a gold faceplate or is it brass? Either way, paint it. Also go to your local tile store. You can buy a special mastic to adhere a new tile to the old one. It's not recommended, but what the heck, it will get you buy without sending a lot of money untl you are ready to invest in another solution. Then you can choose a nice tile that fit's your taste and it will be done in a weekend.

I would paint the wood surround in black or darkest green (almost black!), then change metal insert to a nickel finish.

i love the idea of painting the wood surround a darker color to play up the green marble (from the previous post.). a dark green would give it more emphasis and updating the metal color would help alot too. this is all dependent on whether the green actually works in your room though.
