To layer rug, or not to layer?

Soft contemporary mountain home. Large white rug in living area under William Platner coffee table (pic 1), seemed flat, non-dimensional.....added thick-piled black hide (pic 3). Avoiding patterned rug as close proximity to dining area with bold zig-zag rug under table/chairs. (Pics 2). Context photo (4). Should I leave new black hide layered on top of white rectangular rug in living room?
:) thx!

    I really love your room!

I like the idea of layering rugs in theory, but here you'd have your hide rug next to the 2 hide chairs. It may be a little too much?

I love the idea. My only concern would be whether the hide introduces a trip hazard.

Tressa, the butterfly chairs are really just Carmel leather....not to "hidey", I don't think. But I hear you, for sure.
Annmarie, you have hit on my major concern.....tripping. Gonna' live it for awhile, I think. Good news is that you enter the area vey slowly anyway, as it is a small footprint space.
    Thank you!

I'm sorry, but I do not care of the idea of layering two area rugs and would not encourage any of my clients to do so. Good luck!

I think if you layer a rug on top of wall to wall it works but not one area rug over another I think I would go get an area rug that works in the space .

I think someone will fall - don't chance it.

Unless you live in a nursing home or a kindergarden i don't see the tripping hazard. So yes yes yes, especially with a hide the way you have done. It looks fabulous.

I don't think you need both the white large rug and the cowhide. Did you try the cowhide alone, or do you want the white rug for warmth? And I think the all white rug (without cowhide) with the accent pillows looks nice.

Thank you, all! It has been some time, now, and no one has tripped. The white, alone, looked so weird from the loft area.....the "aerial" view, as it were. Just looked like this huge, kind of cold, expanse of non-descript blah. I'm a very tactile decorator....need texture/layers to build the visceral feeling I am going for. What can I say? I was going for a warm, inviting "pit" of a small foot-printed space......in front of the roaring mountain-top fire.....neither the hide, nor the white, alone, took it far enough into the cozy chalet zone. :) The large white rug defines the sitting area next to the dining area, and the hide topper gives it a warm, but graphic edge.
Here are two updated photos. Recently added the black wrought iron/steel-cabled railing to the loft which seems to really support the sharply contrasting layered rugs.

Do you like it there ?
To me it looks like a black can of paint spilled over the candid white rug, I would remove it . You could get a rug like this one to compliment the other one that you already have in black and white

Thanks, Genvieve! Definitely one of my original thoughts.....another nice graphic rug to complement the zig-zag in the dining room, but, alas, they were too close together! Beyond "busy"! Enough to make your eyes cross with both patterns! :)

Hi there! I love your furniture choices and your rugs but, the layering idea isn't good...DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN! You should try doing the same rug same pattern in the two rooms . or do the black and white rug where it is and the cow hide ALONE. add a pop of color on your tables or if you just want black and white come back with some accents with stripes, chevron, or polka dots

I know that I sound a bit blunt in my opinions :) I prefer the white rug alone, nothing on top you just add a few more pillows or get another table .

I like what you have done and think the black rug looks fine over the white as there is only pattern in the white one and not color. Love the black rail you have installed and agree that it ties together the look. I too have a contemporary mountain home and understand it is not easy to mix styles and get the warm mountain living look without looking too urban.

Have you tried a table cloth on the table? Not a full one, just a medium circle not even to the edges. Then you break up the white rug from above without the 'paint spill' look previously alluded to!

Fe: thank you for the tablecloth idea, but the coffee table is a Warren Platner......iconic architect and designer. It serves as a focal point in the room and I wouldn't want to cover it up. Actually, I'm doin' fine with my layered, textured rug look!

Fe: here you go....you can see the table better in this pic:

Love your latest picture and it shows off the beautiful table which in my humble opinion should never be covered. The rugs look perfect together so don't change a thing. Nice to see someone successfully work outside the box. I do it often and it is great fun.

Just joining this discussion. Am intrigued by what Urban Elements owner said above about not liking the layering idea. I love the look but am concerned about trip hazards. Curious if there's a way to get a layered look with one's rugs without layering...can one put them side by side? Other ways to get the layered look in the living room? Thx.

I love layering and do it in every home! Having said that, your light rug with light sofas is not working for me but love the dark hide. One thing that struck me is the red accent on dining side with the cross on pic.... so here's a thought to give it more pizzazz.. why not consider a rug rug under the hide? If you don't like that, at least bring some red into that area, with a large bowl on table or other red accents. lovely home!

Thank you, Sharleeg! Rugs always challenge me. In the end, we had a rug made for the area....copied a Navajo double saddle blanket' design...from the JB Moore Trading Post era.
