Indoor shutters might look good but close to window so you don't lose the window nooks. Depending on your climate though, drapes may give windows more insulation value

The windows already have indoor shutters. There are bi-fold indian shutters folded back into the sides of the window return. They are split so you can just close the top or just the bottom. I'm trying to think what fabric drapes would go with it because the shutters are so pretty it would be a shame to hide them completely.

Are you thinking of painting the room, which BTW is gorgeous. If you are bringing color to the walls, then you could leave the shutters as is for nice contrast against the wall color. If this is the dining room, then pattern could be brought into the room through a large area rug. After all is in place, painted, art up etc, then you will be better able to make a decision about if curtain panels are even needed. I think the shutters are great on their own.

Perhaps something fairly sheer or something like lace panels if you do want to add something as a window covering. But inner mounted, not outside covering the shutters.

I love the windows as they are. Keep them really clean and put a tall urn/fern or sculpture in front of the windows in the inset.

No drapes but wooden (colored) horizontal blinds would make the room pop :) All white would work, but have to be careful with all white color scheme. I mainly agree w/ rosecottagehome.

Sheer linen curtains could also work. You could lightly tie it up (at each side) like two ponytails. Either way, you would not be hiding the windows, which look really good.

your windows are gorgeous, move on, decorate the rest of the room, Look at the big picture not just one element , leave windows for last. ugh I always say to drape mostly for practicality. as pz007 said I would select a sheer linen on a wrought iron curtain rod for a soft glow and a hint of privacy when u need it - it'll provide a rustic italian look. If you prefer sans curtains it'll still look great. I love your house - congrats on a beautiful home :)

I agree with others - leave windows until last and then I hope you do not curtain.

Ordinarily I would say beautiful linen drapes would add to the room however with the Indian shutters you don't need them unless of course you need another layer to insulate. Perhaps a simple roller blind in a beautiful fabric and the shutters. Leave it to last and see what you think.

Get your rugs next and tone other things using colours from the rugs. Gorgeous house.

Sheer Roman Shades would be perfect for this kind of a room! The inset of the windows would allow them to sit perfectly and look beautiful. You can go with really any neutral, light color as it would go with the room and the shutters. The light fixture would also have some contrast with any light color you choose. Roman shades would sit perfectly in those windows and would look great!

I happen to like the woodwork.. What this room needs most right now is some wall color.
You should check into some of the new wallpapers out now.. easily remove and a fast way to bring pattern into the room as well. Looks like there are high ceilings.
Once that is established, you'll see how it impacts the simple beauty the windows already have.. Suggesting bolder colors to play up contrast with the windows lighter tone.

Please don't put anything on the windows right now. The place looks a little bare but that will not be the case when you move in. Wait to decide if you need any other window dressings until after you've decorated everything else.

Wow- what a lovely place!!!!! I would actually consider the drapery last.... depending on the other colors/patterns/art your bring into the room. The trend these days is to go very minimal... Something about taking down all of those heavy, dated, busy treatments- everyone says ahhhh... so much better. Maybe just a few elegant panels. Good luck!

I'm tending to agree with everyone about just leaving them bare. Its all a bit over whelming as the entire house needs color and decor and I'm only able to work on it once a month for a few days as I live 2000 miles away. Thanks Elizabeth Cabell for the link to the paint colors, I'm in heaven checking them all out! There are 4 windows like this in the room and more in the library and dining rooms. One at a time!! Its a bright, peaceful house and I don't want to distract from that by going too bold in color, which is what I'm normally attracted to. I think this is why I'm so stuck. Any other color ideas would be appreciated. Thanks all!!

I would highly recommend roman shades instead of drapery. Drapery would be a bit heavy for the space. Romans would fit perfectly and look clean and modern .

I absolutely love your house - it's a beauty. And it's in such great condition for an 1830 home. One of the things that you can see in older homes that I don't see here is overpainting where you lose the fine detail of the woodwork, molding and plaster walls. I would work on furnishings first and perhaps see if you could work with the existent paint color and add art and other decor. If you did paint another color I would keep it fairly neutral and muted in color.

Wow details! I completely agree on the less is better approach. Once the rugs, soft furniture and wall decor are in place you'll know if you need additional fabric in the room for the echo factor. If you find you need something try jabots inside and close to the window. I think there is enough room. The jabots should have an elegant trim to equal the high quality of the millwork. Love your house.

You have an extremely beautiful space... lots of good ideas above... whatever you decide make sure its does not hide this space and wood working... If you go with drapes one option is a very shear drape yet that may not fit your need for privacy or cutting sunlight at specific times... if you go with a dark out drape have the rods much larger than the window and above the frame so when you pull them back from the window you don't hide anything and they become an accent rather than "hey look at those drapes oh you have a window there too"... this method will fit the time period and give a very grand appearance...

I'd you really like the space and open windows, don't drape. Use exterior shutters, which may be manually or mechanically open and closed. It customer exterior heat/cold, and there is no lint inside. The effect of fully open views can be stunning, or if pulled closed, with only the slightest of gaps a baby can nap in the daytime.

I agree with leaving them as-is or maybe trying roman shades. If you are having trouble envisioning what having a treatment would do to the window, or if you want to play with sheers without investing money or hurting the windows get a cafe tension rod and a store bought sheer at Target or Kmart and put it in the window. Not for permanent use, but that would at least let you better envision what impact various options could have.

Your house has some amazing architectural details! I would absolutely suggest adding some drapes to emphasize your windows! Roman Shades would be lovely in the windows! Shades are a wonderful way to add softness, color and a subtle patten. They would also not take away from the beautiful architecture of the room.

How lucky you are to have those windows and gorgeous shutters. I love the simplicity of them. If it were my house I would leave them as is! Beautiful just like they are.
