Stained Kitchen Cabinets - Any room for that?

The Kitchen is part of an open layout where it leads into a Living area with a staircase leading up to a different floor. I am going to stain the bannister a rich espresso brown and was wondering if it would not be better to do the same to the kitchen cabinets so it flows.
Should it make a difference if it is only the external oak cabinet doors and frame of the cabinets that are stained and not the whole cabinet?

Here's one more idea. How about staining or painting the white spindles dark? That would tie in with your dark floors and your cabinets. I would consider using chalkboard paint on a smaller area and not all your cabinets. Do you have a pantry door you could paint? Or you could even try it as a backsplash.
If you're even considering selling at some point, the chalkboard cabinets might be a negative and you have such nice solid wood now.
Changing out your hardware to bronze will be a nice update. If you are looking for a change, I would suggest doing something creative for your backsplash instead of the cabinets.

Do you have wood spindles are they going to be stained, are they close to the cabinet color. If so leave the spindles, stain the banister and leave the cabinets. Staing the cabinets will be a huge job and will totally change your kitchen so you might end up having to change counters too.

The Bannister has white spindles which will not be stained. Would it be even better to get more creative and do a chalkboard paint for the outside of the cabinets versus using the same stain for both the bannister and the cabinets?

Great idea to stain the bannister in a darker color: it will go well with the floors. And we also recommend to keep the white spindles but you should change the wall color to a much more lighter one. A classic white or a light grey would be perfect and it would clear up the room. Those black counters will look much more stylish and rich.

Yes! And chalkboard paint also comes in a variety of colors, so you can keep it light.

I am thinking in terms of time, with the chalkboard paint concept I can limit it to the exterior panels but since the hardware will be oil rubbed bronze do I necessarily have to replace the cabinet knobs?

If you want it to flow I would do the entire bannister in a color close to the cabinets. And while you are there you might change it to a style that matches the cabs better.
