Painted Beams

I have exposed rough hewn beams that have paint on them from previous owners. Can I use a hand sander to try and remove the paint for a lighter look? I'm looking for the same look you get when a brick house has a white wash effect. Or is it too late for these beams?

depends on how many coats of paint is on there

Thanks for your thoughts. I have no idea how much paint is on there, so I guess I'll do a test area and see if I can get the look. If not, here comes more paint.
