Old Maple Floors

We're redoing our kitchen, but the floors are old hard maple and have been warned they cannot be refinished to look darker since they don't take the stain evenly. There is no sub-floor under. We're trying to decide to either refinish clear, or paint. Anyone have experience with either?

If the old maple is not too warped, you might want to consider laying new flooring right on top of it. If you consider flooring products that are inexpensive, it could end up costing less than sanding, staining and sealing the old floor.
