To paint if yo stain...that is the question

Kitchen cabinets are maple, in excellent condition, but the colour (very orange/gold) not our thing. Ready for a change! Shall we paint white with island painted black or stained a darker expresso/chocolate. Stain everything rather than paint? Looking forward to any and all advice!

How about trying to lighten things up with a different color wall paint before committing to such a big project as redoing cabinets?
Here's a lovely kitchen, I think, with natural maple cabinets. You could also replace the hardware with something metal to match the appliances.

Thank you for your responses so far. This is an older photo. Since then we painted walls Barnwood Ben Moore . Love the new paint but it feels so dark. We are also painting all the trim throughout the house white.

I was uncertain about the idea of painting cabinets - especially tricky over stained wood - but these results have me considering it for my own kitchen.
