How does the heat effect the plants in the metal trough?

I am wanting to use these as a raised flower bed around my house, with lots of perennials.

It doesn't seem to effect them. They grow pretty large and healthy

I'm in a hot desert climate and would like to do something similar to these tubs but again I worry that they would get really hot and kill the plants. Do you think this would be a concern?
