Love the mirror? Where did you get it?

The balinese/ indian mirror adds a nice touch but gets lost on the off-white wall and beautiful accessories. So do the hanging porcelain/ ceramics which need to be grouped and spotlighted.

Consider alternative wall art instead to complement your scheme:





Or maintain the colour scheme on organic subjects

The sofa is also off white. Do you think that the white mats on the pictures of the vases would be too contrasting? Also, how would you suggest the plates be displayed? You had great comments, thank you.

I think you should move the top two plates down below the ones on the side. And they all need just a little more breathing room between them and the mirror, maybe an inch to an inch and a half.

Your mirror is great - don't change it; just change the backdrop for it and pop the white seating!

decoenthusiate- What if I painted a large rectangle around the mirror and spaced the plates out a bit. The room has a two story ceiling and the opposite walls are two story. I don't know if one whole blue wall will go with the rest of the room.

Well, that's the kind of advice you get when we can't see all four walls. I'd bet you have something else in that room that would be "just the ticket" for the mirror area, but we haven't seen it yet. Care to comment and use the Attach Images button to add the other three walls to the dilemma?

I would move the plates to be on the sides of the mirror but staggered the same amount as the are now

I think the mirror and plates might be more suitable for the dining room. Besides getting lost on that wall, the arrangement has the wrong aspect ratio. I'd like to see some Asian art that isn't blue.

Hello katandtay, The room looks great and I think you have plenty of options with everyone's suggestions. The back wall would definitely seem to be your focal wall (from the pic) and will add a lot to the room. The end tables and sofa take up most of the bottom half of wall space and by adding an art feature that is horizontal above them, you will create balance. I suggest hanging a group of 3 or 4 pictures centered behind the sofa. You also have splashes of blue throughout the room (which are great) and adding pops of blue to the wall will continue to help your eye travel around the room without overpowering the space. I know the style of the art and furniture pictured below is quite different from yours, but the concept will still work. Best of luck.

I thought I'd add pictures of how blue plates can be hung for max impact. Consider hanging them in a vertical row beside a door/ or horizontally over a door or on a pillar.





the art:
What makes the pictures with white picture mats stand out on a white wall are the frames. The examples posted earlier commands immediate attention and then the eyes are drawn around the room to appreciate the sympathetic accents.

I have added pictures of the other walls

I like the window but not those plates around it ,I noticed that groveraxle is here and the magic is about to occur :) so I would paint that wall to make the window pop since you like blue let's see what the wall looks like in blue to start ,groveraxle make magic happen please.

The little window mirror is cute, it just needs to be somewhere else. You can buy groupings of prints or the sectional paintings expensively on eBay. You can search by color there too. You need something much bigger in that space. If you want to do a big mirror, again search "locally" on eBay to avoid having to spend $1000 on one. Just do your search and refine it to within 20 miles of your zip code and save the search to get notified when someone lists one. I like the idea of the blue accent wall and a LARGE gold or silver mirror.

I am not seeing the additional photos of the room, but it might be because I'm on an iPad. If you're reluctant to paint the room another color because of it being two story, (A lot of work!) you should consider new furniture. The problem right now is that the walls and the furniture are almost the same color. There is no contrast. You could paint the entire room a darker neutral, tan, grey or griege which would not be an issue if you sold the house. (Blue would need to be painted over) Then remove the rug (which is over carpet anyway) and the blue accessories and go in a completely different direction as Groveraxel suggested.

I painted your wall kind of a colonial blue, and then a red as close as I could come to the red wall reflected in the mirror. Because you already have one accent wall, I wouldn't do a second one.

In any case, I don't think the arrangement of plates and mirror works in terms of balance and scale anyway. If the mirror were about 1 1/2 times as wide, it might be used alone. Or if you had a whole bunch more plates, you might do an arrangement of them alone. But as it is, the mirror is the wrong size and aspect ratio, and it overwhelms the plates.

I'd keep the wall white and find something else for over the sofa.

I really like the blue. The red wall is in the dinning room. I guess I could move the mirror to the dinning room and find some wall art for the living room.

I love those pictures. I can't tell if they would be big enough for over your sofa. That looks like a dining chair in the background, so they don't look big enough.

Fantastic! Nice work! Can't wait to see them on the wall. Love how they have the gold frames and the warm tones of the furniture. I have "heard" here on the site that the art should not exceed 6" to 8" above sofa.

Those should look great, especially if the blue color in them is the paint color on the wall. It will really make the gold frames pop! Navy and gold can be seriously stunning together.

How far apart should I hang them?

5" above sofa back and one frames' width between them.

Do you think the mirror will look ok in my dining room?

I think being white it will contrast too much with the dark wall and furniture. If you were willing to paint it brown, I think it would be great in there.

The mirror seems a bit too country cottage to work here. Do you have a sunroom where it could work/

decoenthuslaste, the mirror is actually Balinese from India. My style may appear to be Asian but I lean towards French Country.

I don't have a sun room, wish I did.
