Exterior colors / painting brick

Looking for color suggestions for exterior as we fix up this house. We originally thought gray siding, paint brick gray, white trim , black shutters. But neighbors have that color scheme. I really HATE the tan brick... Any suggestions or experience painting this color brick?

I am assuming this is an unpainted brick you have now, right?
Yes it's untainted, outdated yellowy tan.

Is the wall unit sticking out of the siding staying or going?
What color is the roof? It looks white on my screen.
Is the roof in good enough shape to keep or are you re-roofing?

We'll be putting on a new roof. Haven't decided if keeping wall or not yet.

Here are a couple of color combo's that are mainly not gray (because of the neighbor) and are not tan (because you don't like the tan brick). Let me know if I'm going in the right direction.

For the roof, consider going with a shingle that is a little bit darker. I am thinking something neutral but versatile like Weathered. Here is a link to various colors for this mfg - you will want to check the vendor for your roof material http://www.gaf.com/Roofing/Residential/Products/Shingles/Timberline/High_Definition

These inspirations are for color conversation purposes :)

You can also upload a photo of the front of your home into either the Benjamin Moore visualizer http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/for-your-home/explore-paint-colors

or the Sherwin Williams paint app https://www.sherwin-williams.com/visualizer/

and 'paint' with colors to narrow down your selections. You will still need to get samples to find the exact color, but the visualizer on either site will help tremendously.

Thank you! I forgot about the paint apps. Going to try them. I really liked the cafe / mocha brown color

Since we will be combining painted brick with siding... Suggestions, because I have clue... Should brick be darker or lighter then the siding. Yes roof with be a neutral gray / black

Not a big fan of painted brick. Why go for something that will just peel and be a hassle in about 10 years or so. Tan brick is classic, not dated. Try cleaning it first.

You have a classic split level and I would play that up with mid-century colors, like aqua or maybe rust, medium moss green, or charcoal grey/brown/black (only if you go with vertical board and batten in cedar--dark colors fade fast otherwise). The pale blue is not a strong enough contrast to work with the brick. A darker blue might be OK. They were bolder in the colors back then than we tend to be. Grey unless it is of the greige/brown grey type, probably won't look good with the brick. Battleship grey is horrid and cold, esp. on an exterior.

Looks like it could use some paint on the trim and windows as well. Even older wood windows are worth keeping and reglazing (not DAP--try Sarco). Dark trim and fascia could bring the house out.

The air conditioner unit is very odd looking and would be better relocated. A bigger upstairs window could look nice too, and add some window casing. Some midcentury stylized shutters might look good too, maybe with some matching mod porch supports, depending on the route you pick.

I have seen some whitewashed brick come out looking very cool with a contrasting color on the rest of the house.

Have you considered using a stone veneer to cover the brick? You can choose and custom color the stone, and it is easily applied right over the brick.

    A few ideas:

Gray siding with a white stone would look beautiful, or gray stone with blue siding would be nice too. The contrasting colors usually turn out the most striking.

The yellow brick and low slung roof and half wall are reminiscent of F L Wrights prairie style homes. Maybe look at his homes for inspiration.

Too bad you don't like the yellow brick. I wouldn't paint it. I think it is unusual and attractive. Here are some other yellow brick homes to look at:
