Same era for sure. Prob the same "one owner" situation as well. The nice thing about it is that it's priced so that she could do a ton of updating. It needs a bunch of work... the popcorn ceilings are visible in the photos. That has to go. Wallpaper in one room obviously and crown molding and prob most of the cabinetry/trim. The carpet. The kitchen floorplan is terrible, imo. (so was ours) The bathrooms. The light fixtures. The stained glass windows. LOL

Ok, I realize that is a ton of work. We took our time and are still pecking away at things. But we have time and she has more of that than we do!

What bugs me most about the twin is all the different floor surfaces. Yes to tearing out the kitchen and changing the floor plan. The wallpaper in the DR could be fun, though, if combined with less trad furniture and the addition of colour (paint the crown molding!) and a wood floor. Although there seems to be some kind of border at the top, which would have to go obv.

happy, look at the LR picture that says "8 of 32" and the one with the stairs that says "21 of 32" and you can see the stained glass windows. These are of the house rred's family member is looking at, not rred's house.

What gets me is that the house for sale is like a time capsule. Time has stood still in it…for decades. I am 77, but my environment changes frequently. It’s an art gallery installation, not a museum. This feels like a museum.

Actually, Lad, I like the DR best in that house... the table and buffet look perfect in there, and I don't mind the wallpaper either tbh. It's the snazziest room in that house, imo. But, my SIL hates it. LOL

Thanks KC I had to blow it up to see the stained glass that's interesting most people don't want it though but it's pretty you don't need a stained glass piece hanging in your window now if you decide to get that place and you want to keep that

rred, how tall are the ceillings in your house and, presumably, the twin/cousin house? It may be the way the pictures are taken, but they look very low. In which case I would definitely paint the crown molding, it would open up the rooms enormously.

Architecture Stained glass in that quantity is very odd…not at all in sync with the rest of the vibe. I suspect a personal story there…a friend, relative, or the owner with a hubby or professional connection. And it is like buying a house where the owner painted the art directly on the walls (hmmm…like my place…uh oh…)

It needs maybe way too much work... it would take an ambitious person to want it. I could see younger us doing that, but she is not feeling it. I think it has good bones, and it's on a fantastic lot in the place she wanted to be. But... whatever.

It would be a lot of contractors to manage and a lot of decisions etc. Probably too much for her. And a big house to manage for one person.

That's an amazing number of stained glass windows (of various shapes) in a single house. I wonder if the original owner/builder did stained glass as a hobby and this house was his/her masterpiece or if they just loved stained glass and commissioned all those windows. All the stained glass could be removed and perhaps sold at auction or donated or ??? but some are really odd shapes and sizes. The regular windows could have custom replacement windows made that would help with heating and cooling but they would cost a pretty penny. I think a buyer would have to be drawn to the location and have the funds (and time/patience) for the reno to get involved with this house which was a dream for the original owners.

Maybe the house was originally built for a pastor of a church. 🤷‍♀️

Well, that house would be really interesting to fix up. It needs some walls instead of railings! I think I would call it “modern Prairie Style/ Frank Lloyd Wright/Tiffany windows, 70’s mash up” The outside view of the front door really shows the good bones, the curb appeal is excellent, it really looks “expensive”.

I did find the old real estate brochure for our place in CO….tenants’ furniture. We bought it for the view, and the unfinished basement space that could be converted into 2 bedrooms and count as real square footage.

That view is worth what ever you paid for it!

I am really digging that orange chair/ottoman and the HOPE pillow. I grew up with a needlepoint throw pillow my mom did with the LOVE ala Robert Indiana. She probably got the pattern at the Chicago Art Institute shop...

Today I finally made a specific trip to Michaels for a frame for my FireHorse poster that has been sitting on the DR table all summer... ROFL

I put it here, bc the LR still needs more jolts of color, and more horses. LOL

The little orange/red thing next to it is the actual canvas square cut from the mural that the poster was made from. It's the eye of the horse, and the star on its forehead. I'm debating whether to put it on the blank wall next to the poster, or just leave it propped up there like that. It kind of works for me like it is... I just stuck it in a 12x12 album frame I had here bc it kind of matched the blond wood frame I got for the poster.

LOL Don't look too close at that snake plant near the window. It's so floppy and huge. I've had that thing since I was 18 years old. It was my first "plant" and I just let it get wild in its old age. LOL Sort of like me, I guess.

Leave it propped up. Looks effortless (must be one of interior mags favourite words, ha) and 'artsy'.

Maybe the stained glass is there to block out peepers while affording the ability to keep no curtains or blinds? While I love stained glass (wanted to do that as a hobby and inherited every tool needed to make that happen…but no time so gave all away), I think the style of the stained glass is not keeping with the house style. Graphics more modern would work better. The dining room wallpaper reminds me of something my older sis would put up.

Either the owner is a stained glass hobbiest or Bigly rich or those are clings!!! Probably clings.

As OB and I pay not too hard attention to homes around us, he’s shocked as to how good things look in photos versus in person. (I told him this would be expected, by me, who would drag a young YS around to homes having open houses simply because I always loved the houses and I wanted to see inside. I’m nebby.)

The siding project has started. They are tearing off the old siding and it’s loud ! Mr ‘s anxiety due to people touching his stuff is pretty high. It needed to be done, but G-d help us!

PV, my aunt and I would go to new subdivisions display homes to see how the decorators did their thing. Almost every weekend. That is how I wound up being my first condo at age 28. Back in the day when very few single women bought a home. The older women at work said I reminded them of Mary Tyler Moore, and her shows of single women doing it on their own.😁

Here's an idea, rred. You call the listing agent of the stained glass house and ask if those are real stained glass or not. Just explain your SIL is looking around the area, and the house fits the bill, but probably not if she has to replace the glass in that many windows. Then you can report back!

Rred, what is the story behind the Tiffany-style table lamp? Was it a special gift in the past? Is it made from hundreds of individually soldered pieces of glass or is it an illusion of stained glass?

I could do a drive by too... and look at them myself.

BUT, the newest development is that SIL is still living in a hotel, right? She has just realized that she needs an Iowa car registration... her Oregon car registration, license plate and tags expire in October. And along with that, her birthday next month is also the expiration date of her Oregon driver's license. So she went to the IDOT website to learn what she needs to get her Iowa Real ID/DL and guess what? She has a PO box but no in-state home address. Doesn't get mail here, doesn't have any utilities in her name here, holds no lease agreement or does any local business here and for all intents and purposes, is not a state of Iowa resident. It says right on the Real ID requirement list that you need 1) proof of ID (birth certificate/passport) 2) proof of her SSN (your Soc Sec card, a W2 or tax form w name and full SSN) and 3) TWO PIECES OF OFFICIAL MAIL w her name/current IOWA address on it. A POBox doesn't qualify...

This is what we're dealing with... Otherhalf is so over it. We have tried and tried to get her to get these things done, in the right order, but she just ... doesn't... listen.

Got our own stomach churns drama happening here. It’s not my drama, thankfully, I got a front row seat tho….so far it’s progressing just as we expected and time is running awfully short.

Rred, call the realtor. 😂 Those could be clings…..my bestie has the design and printing equipment to make her own, which she’s done. She’s completed vehicle wraps, wall murals, displays….from design to install. Although, her most impressive wall art was done in her own former home with wall paint and brushes. She did an hombre effect for two walls across from a window then somehow made tree shadows, very light tree shadows, without using diluted paint. I sat in her living room thinking the tree shadows across from me were real until I realized the window behind had no trees there. Her first attempt wasn’t successful, in her opinion, so she did it again.

PV interesting concept I should’ve thought of that… They might be custom window clings and that would make way more sense than custom stain glass. Whatever your current drama is I hope it’s resolving painlessly for all concerned. Same for you, Rred…

Well rred, I guess when your SIL has to uber, she will decide she needs to do something. At least rent something so she can have a permanent address.

My gut feeling is that those stained glass windows are really stained glass windows... it's a really nice home in a really nice neighborhood, yada yada yada...

And, I am sorry to drag my SIL's dirty laundry here, but geezaloo I had to vent and you all got to hear a piece of it. LOL . She is the world's most frustrating person to try to help. Yet she keeps asking us to help her... Her other sister, the one with the pool house, is about as helpless and indecisive, but somehow she has managed to maintain a residency here. LOL I just keep telling myself, "This could be me..." and act accordingly with them. lol

Jay that table lamp in our LR is a real stained glass piece, not expensive/fancy, but substantial and heavy and I remember liking it for the design and colors, so I bought it for myself. It's a design of "willow trees" -- got it before C ever came up with the term "Tree House" for this place. I have a fake Tiffany lamp at the lake house too that has birds on it, with red eyes that glow. LOL Of course that one is in the "Bird Room" (the den) with that crazy gallery wall of birds.
