Height of limestone fireplace mantel

We are re building from a house fire. Our library is 12 x 13. We had a brick surround with a wooden mantel above. We don't remember the height because it was destroyed. We do remember having to look up at it when sitting down across the room. And the Christmas stockings didn't hang down to the floor. Any suggestions on height?

right around 60".......However, it really depends on the proportions of the firebox and the surround.

You should draw up a sketch of the fireplace wall using a the scale of 1" is equal to 1 foot, and take a paper cutout of the mantel and move it around on paper until you like the proportions.

Or another option is to cut out a larger cardboard mantel and move it up and down on the actual fireplace wall until you like what you see.

It may be right at 60" or it may be off by a few inches, but at least you will have something that works for you and your house.
