In our area we are also liable for trespassers. I.E. Someone trespasses and drowns in pool, without proper guard fences we can be potentially sued. (To many lawyers looking for a paying job). In your area, check with housing inspector office at city hall to check for minimum requirements.

In Canada, there must be a fence around the entire pool 5' high...and the side of the house can NOT be part of the fencing (this protects young/tiny people from sneaking out and drowning). This fencing also works as a safeguard against trespassers as Curt mentioned.

For a fence you will need first install vertical posts. You can drill a 1.5" hole in deck or big enough so swaz all blade can fit in, and then use a sawz all to cut 4" x 4" square in everywhere that needs a post. For a really study post it should go below right into the ground in a bucket of cement.

Pool enclosures that were installed with a permit continue to be considered compliant (except for the new requirement to lock gates at all times which necessitates owners to upgrade the locking mechanism or simply to buy a padlock and lock the gate).

But if you are replacing the fence (not just repairing / maintaining a compliant fence) then:
You can't allow direct access from the house/garage to the pool area &
...[all] doors having direct access outside the pool area must be equipped with self-closing, latching and lockable devices located a minimum 1.35 m (4 ft 6 in) above the door which must closed and locked at all times that the pool is not in use. An overhead garage door cannot form part of a pool enclosure.

Which I take to mean erecting a second fence between the house & the pool OR all relevant doors be self closing, latching, & lockable. So your patio doors likely wouldn't suffice, but your self-closing, old-fashioned screen door would!

So if you are in Ottawa & you are not replacing your existing compliant enclosure, then you have many options.
