Here's a pic of mine--used to be 4" square off-white and mauve installed like diamonds--it was a disaster. I really like the way the 1" granite tiles work with my space--and, they're inexpensive (from Tile Outlet in Chicago).

I love what you did -- it looks so much better than white. I would, however, move the green thing to a different area. It doesn't fit and it detracts from the beauty of the other stuff. Am not saying this to offend, (sorry) but it would serve better in another area of your home.

I think the neutrals get a bit lost with the dark cabinet and counter. I would do a back splash that intermixes neutrals with some brighter colors or has some metallic squares for some shine.

How about a larger subway glossy tile instead of the small detailed ones you have showing. It competes with line on the cabinet doors

I would start by reducing the size of those overhead cabinets, they are enourmous and seem to be in the way, Also, I would change the doors on them (Glass would be nice and add some light) and THEN I would decide on the back splash.

I agree with Glass Tile Oasis. You need to keep it light. A mesh mounted mosaic seems to be a good scale for the size you have for the splash.

I would go simple (a light porcelain subway tile that mimics natural stone) and then do a colorful feature above your cooktop. Here is what I did in my kitchen. We recently remodeled our kitchen, bringing in cherry cabinets, and used tin tiles, which add light & sparkle to the space, and which are very easy to clean.

Stainless steal panels as a backsplash.

We have cherry cabinets and Corian countertops (perfect for me and the amount of attention I pay to them). We picked up a lighter color from the countertops for the backsplash and accented with small glass tiles. I love the way it turned out. My kitchen is warm, welcoming, has a little visual interest at the base level but not so much to date the look too quickly. We could probably take the glass tiles out at some point if we wanted to change them out.

The backsplash is more on the modern side. Your cabinet honey color and the hardware is gold wouldn't match with the backsplash. I think a stone backsplash would be a better choice.

A light, neutral tumbled marble would be light enough but also would compliment the color of the hardware.

what's your style preference? this can go any way you want..... lots of people will have their own preferences but it is your kitchen and no one can really give you a working solution without knowing your personal taste. Sorry not to have pretty pictures but I would need more input from you first. :)

I have cherry cabinets also (although mine seem lighter) and Emerald Pearl Granite (mostly black). I used quartz 1x1's and 2x2;s with sage green liner tiles (hand made glass) to accent. The green picked up on the slightly green pearl colors in the granite. It's beautiful and not too dark! I do have really good natural light source near by. Many compliments.

What you have pinned up behind the range works just fine. You need something light, like this, to contrast the cabinet and countertop color. The horizontal pattern in the backsplash tile will offset the vertical lines in the cabinet doors and bring balance (subconsciously) to the kitchen.

Lighter is better. The subway tile looks like it will do very well in this space. What is the colour of your floor? That might be another area of inspiration if these subway tiles don't work out.

turquoise blue subway tiles would absolutely pop against the dark of the cabinets and benchtop

I think the sample that you selected works. Your cabinets are dark but lovely so the light back splash brightens up the kitchen.

I agree that the granite backsplash should be removed. Would you consider using a larger greenish glass subway -type tile but set in straight courses not offset like the usual? A green color is good complement to the cherry cabinets but the little tiles are too ditsy and not a good scale with cabinets.

We recently refaced our kitchen cabinets. I felt the granite backsplash and painted wall was too busy and cut the space. We ended up moving all the electrical outlets to be hidden under the upper cabinets and put a LED lighting strip underneath the cabinets. I then purchased tumbled stone with curved edges tile for the backsplash. The curved edges gave it a little more formal look to match the cabinets.

How about sea-glass color in an arabesque pattern? That cool not quite hourglass shape.

Tin tiles are extremely affordable and an easy weekend DIY project. Usually costing less than $100 (depending on the size of your kitchen), they are a great timeless look that's easily cleanable with just mild soap and water. http://goo.gl/FdaUNF

Don't do it! Those tiles are going to be so dated in a few months.. Plus, they are hard to clean.

I haven to agree with the ones who say to use light and larger subway tiles.. Don't use blue it will be way too dark.

Take a look at solid piece painted glass. There are no lines from joints and grout. I would recommend a color similar to oyster or other neutral color. Attached is a photo to help visualize ...

we used a marble one, grey and white, and it blends everything together. It looks great ....doesn't compete with the strong island's granite - which is the focal point of the kitchen.

Here's a kitchen I did they has the same size backsplash in your idea pic. It's a travertine stone with has 5 or 6 different shades with a large array of neutral colors.

Cast glass backsplash allows you to customize the texture and color.

In this project, we played with 2 backsplash scenarios. 4" x 6" terracotta horizontally and coordinating colors in a harlequin pattern over the range. Either way, introducing two steps beyond plain neutrals will add texture - and interest without overpowering the space.

I would not go for anything dark or patterned.. it will just make this space look even smaller...what I suggest is something light....where I am from we call it a glass splash back...great, you don't have to worry about cleaning grout....and they are really serviceable. There are so many colours...I thought I would leave the choosing to you ....select something light.

Are you looking to go more contemporary? Simple solid one color glass tiles (mosaic) like above or that lovely solid glass that keeps popping up! You can DIY the solid glass sheets (google it). More Traditional? Tumbled stone would match the granite and cabs . Have fun!

My kitchen is similar. I just had this installed yesterday and love how it changed the entire look of the room.

If you choose the tile you have, I would orient it vertically or at a 45 degree angle. I saw a moroccan themed tile, that would be very nice or even delft-y or recycled aluminum.

I definetly think you should get something lighter to contrast the dark kitchen. As well as a personal and unique touch. We make handmade and costummade glass backsplashes - when it comes to colour, size, form, symbolics, lightning solutions and so on there are endless possibilities :-)

Kelly that kitchen is 7 years old. It’s not exactly a current look, so it might be difficult to find something similar.

Just my opinion, since you have a polished granite, and your cabinets have a sheen to them. As someone suggested, a bacsplash with hints of metallic reflectiveness would be nice. I'm not sure I would want another highly reflective material, especially with your undercabinet lighting. I love my textural backsplash and it has hints of metallic copper in a slate pencil tile, Jeffrey Court brand. A highly textural backsplash would be very interesting for you, I think, with some metallics for interest. I posted a couple of my photos below. Good luck.

Consider a marble or quartz stone slab in the lightest 2 colors in the granite with a subtle pattern. Can you hone the counter tops to remove the shine and reflection and give the granite a more subtle look?
