As you can tell from my own carpet decision dilemma, I'm no expert . . .but it's always easier to offer suggestions to someone else:

Basically, I agree with Kaymanta. Since you already have what looks like a lot of red, white and blue (plus shades of brown), I would go with something neutral on the floor (e.g., either taupe or off-white — with texture or a muted design (like the chevron) rather than another strong pattern. Maybe even something fluffy or furry, like a flokati rug.

I would definately go for a non pattern or barely unnoticeable pattern. White-beige-taupe would add brightness and light to the room, red-orange would add more character to the space. It depends on what you'd like and the use you are going to give to the room (lighter colored carpets are harder to mantain)

Natural hide carpets are really easy to maintain. You just need a vacuum, since they are stain resistant. You only need to avoid ink. For the rest,... as is natural hair (like the human one) , only need a neutral shampoo ;-)

Something on the neutral side with texture would be my choice. The red rug goes if you want to go that bold. You have a beautiful start. I would look at wool sisal because it is a favorite of mine and because it would work in this room.

You could also choose just the right pattern. It has to be carefully chosen though.

I like the red-white-blue color theme of the furniture. Why not stick with that?

It seems to me that the tone of the walls is unflattering for the furniture. How about painting the walls light cream or white to match the white chairs? Then add a patterned rug with darker blue and some red, kind of like Kathy Corbet Interior's suggestion but with a more modern pattern, to pull everything together.

Move the white chairs away from the white fireplace to where the red chairs are and the red chairs to either by the wall on the right or, as suggested in another comment, to the either side of the fireplace.

Replace the sofa pillows (or recover them) with solids and small, simple patterns that coordinate with the rest of the room.

To me, the fireplace wall is too cluttered and without a focal point. I'd remove the two pictures that flank the fireplace and put them on another wall or in another room.

These suggestions have all been amazing. I'm going to rearrange the furniture and take some new photos. The couch is actually more gray than blue, so hopefully that color can be picked up in the next round of photos.

I would recommend a cow hide! have got two and they look amazing:) easy to clean and very durable. would compliment your colors... have fun!

Maybe as suggested Clayton Gray Home, you could consider our devore metallic line with matched hide cushions (or solid white?)

I'm having trouble visualizing how those lumbar pillow covers by Ramona will work with the print on your chairs . .. but I love them!! Animal hides are interesting, as well — but having one adult son who has been a committed vegan literally since the age of 5, I wouldn't even think of bringing them into our home as long as I hoped to ever see him again.

As for rearranging the chairs and possibly the decorative items next to the mantel, I agree with the others who have suggested moving the chairs around a little. . . . and maybe the collectibles as well. It's not that there's anything wrong with where they are now; just that the furniture arrangement feels a little too formal and "predictable" to me . . .as do the decorative items on the shelves. Given the choice (which can be hard to find in small living places) I guess I lean toward informal balance and asymmetrical arrangements where possible . .. as well as mixing not necessarily "related" collectibles in untraditional ways, in order to pique the interest of unsuspecting guests.

Don't underestimate the value of that cream red rug I posted. You only have a day to get it at that price.

I'm not able to move furniture, but I can REmove it and add new furniture that points the right direction. So that's what I did here with a chair I had laying around. I even reupholstered it to make it look a bit more like the Barcelona chairs. Can hardly tell the difference, eh?

Ramona, I think that rug is waaaaaaay too busy for this space:

Turn the couch around, place the red patterend chairs by window separated with small table , remove all wall decor and revisit, try a natural jute rug, add some accent pillows to sofa, splurge on some great art .????

Grover, I respectfully disagree. This is a matter of how bold someone is willing to go, and actually, I don't think this is all that bold. Of course the sofa being grey makes a difference as does the background color of the red chairs. I also liked the double pedestals on the left side of fireplace. That wall can be worked on later after major furniture pieces are rearranged.

We are all working with pictures and monitors, so that is a disadvantage.

Ari, you have great taste. Generally, the rug should be purchased first.

If the pic below can mix those patterns, this room can certainly have a simple red design on the borders of the rug and a pattern on the chairs. When you enlarge the picture below, you can see how much bold pattern is being mixed.

If that rug was cream and red, my monitor needs recalibration. On my screen it looked almost bright yellow. If it's really cream, it might be less "jarring"to me. Also, if the border were square (like the center) or the design a rectangle — more like the border, I think it might make it easier to arrange the furniture around it.

On the other hand, like the lumbar pillow, I LOVE the colors in general, but especially the mix of an intricate design in muted shades of the multicolored rug. I'm not a designer myself, so it"a a struggle to find the right words , but the setting in that photo feels so "comfortable" to me that my eye probably automatically would be drawn to the many visual features of the rug.

It is not yellow although I can see how that picture would make it seem yellow. The retailer describes it: Colors found in this rug include: Beige, Cream, Red. The primary color is Beige.

Now if the sofa is grey, not blue, I am not sure about how this blends.

Maybe someone has asked this question already, what colors are in the rug in the adjoining room?
In order to have a cohesiveness with the other room, you need to basically have similar colors to the other rug that can be seen from the living room. They don't have to have the exact colors and patters, but similar colors.

Adding a high pile rug like the one below (in cream or light beige) with a little sheen would soften up the space and add a more luxurious feel.

But instead of that small, round table, how about a slightly larger, square one to more or less (replicate the open space between all the pieces of furniture) and provide a focal point for conversation, table games, snacks, etc. Sorry for the misaligned proportions in the photo, but I couldn't find an image that was properly situated next the sofa, so just fiddled with this one to suggest what I had in mind.

The fire place is still being hidden behind the chairs, how about placing the red, and tan wing chairs across from the couch(to face the couch) separated by a table to make a conversation grouping. I really don't think those beautiful white chairs (wish I had some like them) really don't go with the rest of the furniture in the room.

Your blend of furniture is just fine. The modern with the transitional is fine. No reason to remove those white chairs.

Move the left red chair deeper into the left. And can you try the couch facing the fireplace with the white chairs under window or along opposite wall?

Please take pictures from both ends of room and of window wall and wall opposite window.

Couch is still looking really blue. Could you find some light blue material to put on the couch so we can see the difference? A decorator would know what exactly to put next to it to see its undertone/complement. But true blue should show us something. Also a closeup of the fabric on the red chairs so we can see the background color better.

Hey, what happened to the coffee cup? That was the one thing saving the fireplace wall. If you were going to remove something, remove the small pictures on the mantel.

ari, the new arrangement is definitely better, but you need to put the large art piece back on the mantel. Your original question was about the rug, so let me see if I can find something that counters the blue undertone in the couch.

ari, I love your white double tier side table, it looks wonderful ;0).

You might remove the short chunky plant from the right corner and place the two columns there where the lights seem better, topped with something tall and shiny, not the sticks in a vase. Float the sofa in the center facing the FP with the white Barcelona chairs right and left of the coffee table, looking at each other over it. Consider using the white and chrome round table that has more of the chairs' style instead of your current coffee table. Now the red chairs can be pulled back toward the corners so they flank, rather than hide, the FP. They should just barely sit in front of the surround and not cover the firebox where I think you should use a contemporary firescreen. Add a sofa table behind the sofa and that's where I'd display all the small framed photos. Frame the coffee cup art with either chrome or red to match the chairs and the little design on the cup. Hang it alone over the FP with a pair of contemporary candlesticks on the left side, opposite of the two corner columns and their sculptural pieces. I think a flokati rug would make the space. The smaller paintings might work in a grouping of five on the wall just out of our view on the right of the room.

deco makes a good point about the Barcelona chairs and the white table relating to one another, but I like them side by side. Deco wants you to try the sofa facing the fireplace as do I. Well I'd like to see a picture to tell. Also, ditto on red chairs pulled to the side of the fireplace surround.

If the sofa were facing the fireplace and the Barcelonas were to one side or the other, the white table could be on the side between the Bs and the sofa. That would tie them in nicely.

You just have to keep playing with the furniture until you feel good with it. Then you can worry about accessories and rug.

I'm going to take a few more photos from different angles and perhaps rearrange more of the furniture. The cup painting was never meant for this room and was hung in the kitchen. I realize there a little bit of clutter on the mantle and corners of the room, but my main objective is to find a rug that works. The suggestions in this thread have been amazing and I'm so appreciative for everyone's thoughtfulness.

Oh, lessismoore, funny you mention Thibault. I had a discussion last week with an artist Thibault mentored years ago and from whom I was taking a workshop. I said I didn't "get" the cupcakes and didn't think much of him as an artist. To which Bob replied, "Oh, really? He speaks very highly of you." LOL

I've always loved his work (not the figures so much). Back in the way back machine (1976?), I had a lovely print of his gumballs (oddly enough, just a single machine, not the 3, which I found infinitely nicer) and of course, in many moves I lost it (Also "lost" some wonderful Lance Goines prints, some of which are not in circulation at all anymore!) I did some workshops with Anthony Holdsworth who had a similar style with use of complementary colors, very luminous (and again, don't love his figures either ...)
But its true, he speaks highly of you. LOL
