Help with Redecorating

Large family room in need of a new style. Im thinking to taking out the carpet flooring and putting in a dark hardwood. Need some ideas of decor and furniture to make the room look pulled together!

I wouldn't go dark hardwood - the room is already kind of dark. The fireplace is really your centerpiece so unless you are going to make a big change there, you're going to have to decorate around it. Since there is no mantle - you can hang a nice piece of contemporary art to lighten up the space. You also need to take out the area rug and divide up the room into sections. Right now, it's one big room dominated by wrap around couches (hard to see in the pic). It looks like the room is big enough to create an area in front of the fireplace with another area in around the television. You could also paint the dark beam that crosses the room white or stain it in a lighter color. Softer window treatments will also help. Nice space.

Start with recovering the fireplace. I also think staining the wood treatment on the wall another color might be a good idea. Please post more pictures.

I like the idea of pulling out carpet and installing hardwood, but you will need a rug to help keep the echoes down in the then voluminous, impervious space. You have a large TV, so I believe the entertainment center needs to be on the long wall to the left; the proportions are wrong for where it is currently located.

You can then direct the traffic in front of the entertainment center, and face the furniture towards the TV; under the lowered ceiling area. This room is contemporary in feeling, so the furniture needs to be, also. Two major areas; one for the fireplace and one for TV viewing. I'd use a low-backed, straight-lined "L"-shaped sofa; maybe black or coffee-bean colored leather. Light area rug and dark wood floors. I visualize the back of one leg of the couch facing you in this photo's perspective, and the other parallel with the right wall.

Do you like the rock on the fireplace? I'd reface it with something else more contemporary. Not just reface, but I'd take the rock off. A lot of work, I know, but if not would require furring out the wall to attach another finish. I can see some horizontal panels going all the way up the wall. Doesn't have to be stone/marble/rock, but could be horizontal strips of wide wood, or even metal.

Is the far wall/ceiling a knotty wood tongue-and-groove paneling? What do you plan to do here?

What kind of window treatment do you currently have? Are those blinds? Shades?

If i could take out the wooden wall I would, but it streches around 30ft tall, same with the stone fireplace! I like the idea of flipping the television to the left side wall but i can't wrap my head around being able to have furniture faceing that and be able to view the fireplace while seated.

My biggest question is what kind of flooring will make the space better, and if there is any type and color furniture that will look the best in the space?

If you want the fireplace to be the focal point, the only way you can also watch TV is if you put the TV over the fireplace. Then you can reface the fireplace to hide the wires.If you do that, you can use a L shaped sectional facing the fireplace with a walkway to the rest of the room down the left side. You need to address the floorplan issues before you can move onto the flooring and colors. Your current furniture placement is all wrong. The only other idea would be to put two equal length sofas on each side of your current TV location and two chairs facing the TV with a square coffee table in the middle.

Hi there! I think you are better off sticking with wall to wall carpet in your space. You have many hard surfaces in here, and the carpeting is adding some much needed softness. I love your wall color, btw!

Unless the camera angle is creating some distortion, it looks as if this room is big enough to divide into two separate areas - one for TV viewing, and a other as a conversation area centred around the FP.

Can you give room dimensions so that we can get a better handle on your space?

At the moment, I am picturing a sofa facing the TV and floating in the room about 9 or 10' away from the TV. Is this possible? And, does this then leave you enough space for two arm chairs flanking the FP (slightly in front of it) and a sofa facing them? Or even four chairs arranged in a circle with a round coffee table in the middle?

Also, you were asking about style and colors of furniture for your space - I would love to see very casual slipcovered sofas in cream/ecru/taupe or other light neutrals. Lots of pillows in shades of blue and brown. And, for the area by the fireplace, either leather chairs in a butterscotch color, or club chairs in taupe/greys.

The sofas and chairs below are all Pottery Barn. Myou can't go wrong with Pottery Barn!

Draw the floorplan of the room on a piece of paper with wall, fireplace and window dimensions. Then take a picture of it and post it here. I am torn between the two furniture lay outs suggested already. We need to know the spacing etc.
