Tub In The Shower: Waterproofing Issues

I have always liked the traditional Japanese bathing concept, where one washes off first and then enters a deep soaking tub. I have seen examples of tubs placed in a shower/ wet room enclosure - i.e. you go through the shower to enter the tub. Some are very attractive. But when I try to think through the required installation procedures to ensure that the entire space is waterproof, I am a bit stumped as to how it can be done with a free-standing tub that requires penetration of the waterproof membrane for the tub drain. Have any of you ever seen an installation where the tub drained into the shower pan drain? I can visualize a Japanese ofuro set up this way, but I haven't checked the plumbing code to see if it would be permitted.
