Island Support

Do you have any details on how the granite is supported? We are completing an island with a 6ft unsupported expanse of granite between the base cabinets and the legs and the GC is having trouble figuring out a support method.

Thanks

    Hi bobandmergill,

The kitchen looks like it's going to be gorgeous We love our island, it is the workhorse of our kitchen/family room area.

We were under a time crunch so we ended up using simple cross bracing under the granite and settling on a post in the middle for added support. The middle support post is not really noticeable especially once stools in are in place. It was a good compromised solution. it's not overbuilt as some would suggest but it's sufficient as long we don't use the island as a dance floor.

I can see your challenge with the long narrow island. If you are placing seating there looks like yo might have space for 3 seats but a center support would interfere with the middle seat. maybe space two supports that double as wine racks or baking pan storage at a third spacing and each seat would have it's own section. maybe on center post will work for your as well.

Good luck and let us know how the kitchen looks when done I like the direction you have chosen.
