First...where are you located? If western is your interest, why not lay an extra-large cowhide in a black/white brindel; find a beaten-up long table between the wall sconces with either a 3" clean-edged beveled mirror or a Remington-style painting above; move the saddle to a smaller wall so it has more presence but not the focus. A copper or brass flush-mounted ceiling fixture would be appropriate for the images you show - and it would not interfere with the ceiling height. Find an elongated copper or brass tray (from Martha Stewart or Pottery Barn) to place near the front door for dirty boots...and maybe down the road potted ferns on either side of the table. Textured green plants are a terrific way to welcome everyone home.

Of course, this is only the beginning of an on-going love affair...take your time to savor every choice you make...and have fUn!

The color would do a lot to transform the space. The red is a bit heavy and dated. SW Blonde would freshen it up!

The barn, Milo's, Warner, Laura, thank you all! The barn I love the ideas. I think those would all be perfect ideas for the space:) you are right...decorating our homes is a love affair and never ends!! As soon as we get done we change our minds haha! Looks like I have some shopping to do!

Sometimes having just one, wonderful artistic object is all you need to grab the eye as people walk in. So do you want people to focus directly on the foyer, or have the eye traveling down onward into the house?. If it's both; then the chandelier matched with the awesome rug might do it. There's nothing like a shiny floor in polished or rare materials to make a foyer stand out just by itself or with Ralph Lauren type of Paint finishes on the wall to bring out textures. You're so lucky to have a real Foyer- I'd maximize it for it's uniqueness. Nitro

Hi, how lucky to have such a large foyer! You have not said if you are open to color changes or if you want to brighten up the area? Do you want to keep the woodwork stained and to keep tile on the floor? Also are you a very casual family or a little more formal?

I'd love to see either a much taller front door, or else one of those over the door skylights added. Those are beautiful sconces! Nitro

I love the red wall - it makes it different and welcoming and sets off the flooring. But again, as designers we are all playing different contrasts and highlights.If I were to keep the red, I would leave the floor bare which is a statement piece. I would move your saddle around next to the cupboard as it would be the thing you first see when you enter the room. I would also work on the type of side table that barn recommended.There is something quite different about this space and I would be sorry to see its uniqueness change too much.

Do you want to stay with the rustic theme you have now? What are the colours of the rooms off of the foyer? Also, could you take a close-up pic of the landing/curtains? Thanks!

Thank you all so much for your nice and helpful comments. I really like the picture with the color changed, however I don't think that's a project I'm ready to undertake yet. I like your ideas of making the floor a focal point, the chandelier, moving the saddle. I probably just need to take that curtain off the window...I had it for privacy, but may be unnecessary. I would love a skylight over the door also. Maybe something with an arch shape?
