How many are you painting? just on the left of the door - or more not quite seen, on the right...

MY opinion is this , most people I now who use chalk paint like the idea of no prep , sorry the best paint jobs are when the prep is the first step to a good long lasting job. Kitchen cabinets get tons of use , there are great products made especially for the job . IMO a good job on kitchen cabinets is when the paint is sprayed on in 2- 3 coats after good prep . My understanding is that chalk paint needs to be waxed in order to really stand up to abuse and the cost of the paint and the wax together is crazy expensive . I would read a lot about this before spending the money and the time

I agree the best possible results would be a professional spraying the cabinets but I was in no position to hire someone as I was doing it myself. Also, using traditional paint was more work than I wanted to do (or could with my age and arthritis). The paint is expensive but I water it down for a smoother finish. Wax is important in the kitchen and I keep it wiped clean with a damp rag or paper towel. I don't have the money for a complete kitchen redo so this has been a nice quick pick me up. So far the cabinets that I did a year ago have held up well and areas that need touch up are very easy to do with a little more paint right over the wax and a quick coat of wax to seal it up again.

Right now, gray is the safe neutral color. A medium or lighter gray would be appealing to a fairly broad audience. White is always a classic on cabinets. If you're keeping the counter tops, I'd go with a grey that matches the veining.

Staceyonion, Check out Breakthrough by PPG Paints for painted floors and cabinets. Very durable and cures quickly. I can recommend a color if you are interested.

Chaulk paint is the kind of fix all but has its positives quick DIY'rs love.

Try General Finishes plus they off great clear coat options.

If you don't clear look into a spray on bees wax. It is also great on granite.

If you go the chalk paint route you can make your own chalk paint at a MUUUUUCH lower cost. Pick up some plaster of paris (Home Depot now carries it or you can buy it at Michael's or Hobby Lobby) Here is a link to the instructions on making your own.

If you go the traditional paint and want to spray I can not say enough good things aboutthis $14 Harbor Freight sprayer. Hubs did a ton of research on it and it works great!. I'd suggest rolling out the first coat and then using the sprayer. Though you could roll/brush all the coats but I think the spraying gives a more professional looking finish. As for the paint, just head to Sherwin Williams and ask them what paint for kitchen cabinets, they will hook you up with the right kind. Just add a little water to it if you spray.
