Our first home is a bit nondescript. I have a modest DIY budget to make some updates and add landscaping. We live in zone 9 and the front of the home faces north. Durable choices and low maintenance are important, as we plan to use this as rental in a few years.

I'll be leaning modern and fairly minimal for the interior decor (which is my nice way of saying poor-man's ikea ;) I don't know if any of that could be reflected on the exterior - I know it's a ranch, but built on very traditional lines. I don't love the shutters for that reason - but would things look too bare if I took them off? I also don't love the colors of the siding or the shutters, but I don't think that can be helped as it's all vinyl. The first closer picture is much truer to the colors, which read a little 90's to me.
