What is the floor? If it's carpet, you don't need a rug.

What color all the walls now? You have too much brown.

I'm not a designer, but I have always liked light blue with dark brown.

Those puffy brown couches suck all the light and energy out of the room. I'd go light warm neutral on the walls--try BM revere pewter--add blinds and plain linen curtains, find a craigslist coffee table with good lines and paint it blue (if that's the color you love), add a blue pillow or two. Replace some of the brown wood with metal, and get a proper lamp instead of that torchiere.

OK, Gee. I've brought the photos from your other post over to this thread.

Now, let's not go at this piecemeal. You've got lots of conflicts in this room and we need to deal with them all at once so you end up with something cohesive. The first mistake is that matching set of puffy leather furniture. The greenish carpet and maroon curtains make the ceiling look green and the couches look red.

So my first question is what absolutely has to stay and what can go?

The curtains are reading red. I would lose the sheers entirely, replace them with blinds or woven wood shades, then add stationary curtains in a textured natural linen.

Resist the urge to get any more big, dark brown furniture. Try to move the sofa so it doesn't overlap the loveseat at the arms. Invest in some real lighting, a table lamp on the table in the corner, a floor lamp (not a torchiere) in the other corner by the chair I Photoshopped in your room above.

Something like this might work.

I don't know what colors I paint in your room; I just manipulate them till I get something I like. I would guess the first rendering is something like BM revere pewter, the one just above might be sea salt or rainwashed. Ultimately you have to paint samples in your room and see how they look in your light.
