Open floor plan - need help decorating

I took some pictures of the main living area in my house - just purchased and need serious help decorating. Everything is bare and boring. The pictures aren't the clearest, but I think you'll get the idea. I'll post the pictures in a couple of series.

1. View walking into the living room from one of the hallways from the front door

2. Opposite view, facing the left hallway the first picture is from - blank space on the wall to the left to put something potentially.

3. View into the right hallway towards the front door / another room (to the right) - blank space on wall to the right to put something potentially.

The two hallways are separated by a 9+ ft. brick fireplace, floor to ceiling on top floor (top floor is a loft overlooking living room, with bedrooms around it).

Couch in living room is a medium brown fabric - was thinking of this rug for the area: http://www.westelm.com/products/andalusia-rug-horizon-b785/?pkey=e%7Candalusia%7C4%7Cbest%7C0%7C1%7C24%7C%7C4&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_-

Probably need some curtains for the sliding doors as well - it's 4 panels as you can see, with a 6'' or so divider in the middle. Not sure what type of curtains are right for this set up, as i'd want them to be minimal and open most of the time (tied back?) since we'd entertain on the deck/patio and be coming in and out. Color/style/type ideas? Would i tie back panels to the left/right, and also to the middle?

Yes, we are very close to an Ikea. We are going to look at that buffet table posted above - its 75" long so fairly large.
Hmm... yes, I don't like the style of that buffet for your dining room. Personal opinion, but I think it is too sort of country style. I think it would be lovely in a 'relaxed' kitchen, with wicker baskets and copper pans, but not in your dining area. Even though, or perhaps because, your dining set has a country feel to it too. So I took the liberty of picking a slightly smaller, but more 'dressed' buffet. It may be too low though, I'm not sure. It is also from Ikea. As is the lamp. But if you want, I can easily put the other one from Ikea in this board, so you can see.

Carolins - would the Hemnes series work as a sideboard or is it too shaker-style? It's a nice piece and the Hemnes series is solid wood.

Also, one option you might consider is to add accent cornice units to frame the sliders. You mentioned the drapes will most likely never be closed - especially with the view that you have and plans for landscaping.
Jared, thanks for the new pics. Your new home is lovely and has a bit of a mid mod feel, so I would keep things simple and bright. Nothing country, nothing fussy. And with a clearer picture of the fireplace and loft above, I really think you need to consider putting the television in the sitting room with the shelves.

Would also like to see what art you have in the dining room. In the meantime, I will do a mockup or two.
The dining room table is definitely a country style. At west elm right now and found a great sale on this table were considering:

    What do you think?
I have some black and white simple photos of a flower and lilly pads, in large frames with a lot of mat showing. I also have a photo of tree branches with a greyish background and yellow leaves.
    Nice table at West Elm.

Whispar: I do like the Hemnes series. The only sideboard is the one with the open shelves? See... that would in no time look cluttered (not good), or you have to fill the holes with wicker baskets and then you're back to more of a country style again. And judging by the table Jared spotted at westelm and by the rest of their furniture, they have a more modern/contemporary style.
Oh, and Jared... I'd keep the dining area without a rug. Rug in living room and rug in 'library' are enough I think.
Your dining room with some art, a red sideboard and rug, that turning pendant from West Elm, linen drapes...and a new dining set from Ikea:
While I like that combo above, I really like the wood west elm table I posted. Plus it gives extra seating as its our main dining area. I bought the pendant light but in reverse color. I was thinking some modern high back chairs and a bench around the new table, but still not sure about what the appropriate side table would be or what volor - the dining table is 72" long.
These three are all from Ikea. None are as long as the Norden above. You could use the shelves on the Norden to hold your extensive wine collection (the one you're about to start).
Console doesn't have to be as long as the dining table.
Here's a (beautiful) example and I like their curtain panels too:

No problem. Sorry I can't turn the table--my graphics program isn't good at moving furniture--but the wood looks great in the room.
I've adapted the moodboard and noticed that you have to watch the legs. Before you know it, the dining room is all legs: table legs, chair legs, console table legs... So I'd prefer a buffet type piece or a console that is more like the one in the dining room photo above, a U-shape.
    Grover, you're a true wizzard :-)
    Black leather chairs, perhaps?
Having said that the console table/buffet doesn't have to be as wide as the dining table... too small isn't good either. I found this one at Pottery Barn, 72" long.
    http://www.potterybarn.com/products/metropolitan-long-console-table/?pkey=cbar&
  • 13 years ago
So the west elm table is 72" long, and the room is just shy of 12'. Do you think its too big or will it work fine? Figure the chairs are pushed in a majority of the time.
Thinking about it more, it seems the table would be too long for the space... there would be about 33" on each side, but that's without chairs. So figure another 12-18" and its a pretty small gap left, especially on the right side since it'll be close to the entry to the kitchen. Am I thinking about this correctly?

Not sure if the link works (if you're not a Joss & Main member), but they have a rug on sale now that is 5' round, cream shag, $102.95

And a 5'3" round white one, less of a shag type, for $69.95
    https://www.jossandmain.com/A-Rug-for-Every-Room-Halifax-Round-Rug~NLO5773~E4985.html

Are you any clearer on the size of the dining table?
A 5' round rug is going to be way too small for the dining room. Even a 4' table requires an 8' rug.
Yeah, groveraxle, I know. I meant those rugs for the 'library'. I don't think I would do a rug under the dining table.
Not getting the dining table - will stick with the one I have for now until I find something else. Was thinking of getting the "big sky" rug from west elm in 5x8 for the sitting room.
Lovely. Is it big enough to go comfortably under the front legs of the sofas?
It's probably a wise decision to keep your current dining set. Don't you like it anymore? I think that a new lamp, some colourful art and something nicer than those placemats on the table will really spruce it up.
Oops, sorry carolins, I was confused. And Jared, when you say "sitting room," do you mean the room with the fireplace or the room with the bookcase? LOVE the Big Sky rug, BTW.
Agree with carolins that you should wait on the dining room table. Your current table is the perfect size and the room is going to look much different with the new lamp and once you hang the art. Get that done before you make any expensive decisions.
I mean the room with the bookcase. Can you share links to the art you put in that one picture? I'd like to see larger versions.

The current dining set was free - it was in my moms house forever and when we moved she gave it to us. I actually like the look of it, but it has a country feel. I think we will swap the chairs and put some place settings and something in the middle.

Actually, I think it will be a shame to put a large area rug in the sitting room (with the bookcases). You'll lose the 'airiness'. I would love that rug in your living room though. But at the end of the day it's about how much you like it of course :-)
Jared, two of the prints are from the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat; you'll find his work here: http://www.art.com/gallery/id--a27866/jean-michel-basquiat-posters.htm?ui=B341F2BCFA644615A0267C417A16F89A I don't know who did the third one (the face).

Basquiat is not for the traditionalist, but his work appeals to me. I find it infinitely interesting.

Wanted to provide an update for everyone that helped:

The space is slowly coming together - the TV is going to be moved into a room to the side (only enclosed room on the first floor) that will act as our main sitting area (I'll show a picture soon). The large couch will be moved, but the small one will stay and we will put a couple of chairs on the opposite side to open up the view to the backyard.

We ended up finding a great deal on a dining table/chairs that fit perfectly in the space - will also update with a picture, hopefully tomorrow. Also ordered a couple of rugs which are on their way (big sky for the "library" area, and the west elm andalusia in yellow for the main area).

Have to ask though - we're still looking for a console/buffet type table for the dining area, but there isn't enough room for it to go against the back wall. Instead we were thinking of a corner unit for the right corner, but I can't find anything that fits the bill. Ideally it would be just table height - not a hutch, with possibly a door on the bottom and some wine bottle holders (exposed or behind a door). Has anyone seen anything that might work?
Thanks for the update. Sounds good. Patiently waiting for the pics :-) I'll have a look for a corner buffet type piece. Think I've seen something along the lines that you're describing, will see if I can find it again.
    Watch this space ;-)
Not a corner cabinet, but I thought I'd show it you anyway. Also available in sort of an aqua/blue colour.
    https://www.jossandmain.com/American-Charm-Pembroke-End-Table-in-White~SQW1702~E5206.html

But here are lots of corner cabinets. Perhaps you'll find something that's similar to what you envision.

Not crazy about the corner table idea. I think it will severely unbalance your room. I would rather see a super-skinny console under the art.

Waiting eagerly for pics of the new place.
I found two long skinny consoles at Wayfair. Each is 6' long. One is 14" deep, the other 16". Are those still too big?
It just doesn't leave a lot of room to the chairs once they're pulled out - let me take a picture with measurements when I get home.
Here's a few pictures of the dining room with the table/chairs and new light fixture:

From the back wall to the pushed in chairs, there's 42''.

The point is really to get rid of the "bar cart" against the left wall - maybe I can just get something a tad bit slimmer and longer for that wall that has cabinets to enclose the liquor? I don't like how messy it looks and I think it's too small.
Very nice dining set. Love the lamp! Why don't you look for a taller cabinet where the bar cart now is? I wouldn't put a console piece behind the dining table. Just hang your paintings and that will be enough I think. You don't want to crowd the space and when you put a console table there, you need to put something on it, otherwise there's no point in having it.
I see now how tight the space is there. That wall where the bar cart is looks like it could hold a fair sized sideboard and would be a nice way to tie together the two rooms.

The new dining set and pendant look great. Hang the art and drapes, and do a simple tablescape and this room is done.
    Art, drapes, tablescape: perfect.
I think I'll do that - replace the current bar cart in that spot.

I found this which might work - only 15'' deep and has an integrated wine rack:

    http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Serrano-Cappuccino-finish-Dining-Buffet/6240665/product.html

Dining table decorations, rug for LR and some accent pillows should be here Thurs or Fri next week. Then we will rearrange the LR:

The smaller couch will stay there, with the larger one moving into the soon to be TV room with the entertainment center/TV. Rug might be too large, we'll see. Ordered the andalusia in yellow in 8x10.. the room, following the outline of the fireplace to the sliding doors, is 9x13... guess we'll see how it looks once it's down, but it'll take up most of the floor.

Then we are thinking of two simple chairs to go opposite of the couch, with a coffee table in the middle. Here were some initial thoughts:

    Table: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Hubbard-Brown-Oval-Mid-Century-Modern-Coffee-Table/6593313/product.html?cid=144058&fp=F&TRACK=CSEPG&mr:referralID=77b04293-df33-11e2-9dea-001b2166becc

Chairs: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60100879/#/40038303 (not sure which color... white seems nice, but figure they'll get dirty quick).
I like your furniture choices. That Tullsta armchair from Ikea is very comfortable, but it also comes in leather (which they claim is top-grain leather) for $199. That might be a better choice if you want white.

You can also get slipcovers in all sorts of fabrics for the Tullsta here: http://www.bemz.com/en-us/product-page/product/armchair-covers/id/tul1/tullsta/ Some of them are a bit pricey, but you can throw them in the washer, they're guaranteed to fit, and they won't shrink.
Some pictures to update everyone who has helped me.

Still haven't replaced the bar cart or hung pictures. Put curtains up over the windowand sliding doors, and will puthe same ones on the windows in the sitting room.

Trying to figure out the back wall in the dining room - either hang the two pictures, or put a long mirror across the wall. Thoughts? I'm leaning towards mirror but not sure.

Also, I feel the room needs an area rug under the table - seems like its missing something. Trying to find something without too much pattern, maybe a beige color.
The space is looking quite excellent, Jared. I really like that pendant from West Elm. As for the dining room wall, go art. First, there's nothing for a mirror to reflect. Second, art is infinitely more interesting. (IMO, pretty much anything is more interesting than a mirror.)

I don't really think you need a rug in the dining room--once you get art on the wall, it will look more complete--but if you decided you want something pretty neutral, check out West Elm's jute rugs.

The gold rug in the sitting area looks good, BTW. I hope you're happy with the way it's coming together. It looks great so far.
I wholeheartedly agree with groveraxle. Go for art and I don't think you need a rug. Especially not when you have art on the wall.
    Love that West Elm lamp.
I do like what you've done so far :-)
