Dymondia margaretae 'Silver Carpet' is a tough, low water ground cover that co-mingles beautifully with other low water, drought tolerant plants. And it takes foot traffic as well. Shown here with Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark' and succulent Echeveria 'Lipstick' below. Also see Water side landscape transformation project for more photos.

Five months after install, we have nearly complete coverage by silver carpet (Dymondia margaretae). Very pleased how fast and flushed this came through. Looking forward to experimenting more with the possibilities. We also built the custom garden beds around the patio to provide non-compacted growing space for the client.

Dymondia is a pefect choice for a walk-on thick growing ground cover for tough situations such as street strips, and could easily survive with just once a month irrigation in Alameda. The Dymondia was used here in all the areas where people would exit their parked cars, alternating with other taller succulents where no pedestrian access was required.
The yellowish/chartreuse foliage with pale pink flowers is the winter/spring flowering dwarf Breath of Heaven, or Coleonema pulchellum 'Sunset Gold' from South Africa. This cultivar of Breath of Heaven has the same wonderfully pungent foliage fragrance of the larger growing species, but lends itself to being kept clipped low to the ground. It makes a beautiful foliage foil for succulents, and has excellent drought and coastal wind tolerance.

This gorgeous home has a private entry and a colorful drought tolerant landscape to make it engaging from the front. This path had dymondia growing between the stones which is hardy and can be walked upon. It can handle sun and little water however does need trimming and will grow quickly.
