Copper Sky Design + Remodel created this primary bathroom on the first floor of a historic 1928 home in Atlanta. Polished-nickel hardware, a neutral palette and wainscoting give it traditional character, while spa-like amenities such as a walk-in shower with a rain shower head elevate the room to modern-day luxury. Warm, dark tones in the floor tile and artwork complement a custom double vanity’s dark wood finish.

matte black penny glass mosaic flooring provides contrast and a nonslip surface. “We liked having the black accents and thought this would be a really fun spot for this pop of black,” Milljour says. On the walls, 4-by-4-inch zellige-style tiles have varying creamy tones. “We wanted something that would give us a clean look without being sterile,” Chelsea says. “We like the variation in this tile.”
A renovation of this large modern-farmhouse-style primary bathroom in Frisco, Texas, by designer Katherine Milljour includes two custom alder vanities with Shaker-style fronts and black pulls. The vanities were designed to give the look of a floating vanity without the large gap at the bottom where items can get lost. Marble-look quartz countertops and backsplashes add to the airy look.
“We installed LED motion-activated lights underneath, and the legs left room for that to show,” Weihs says. “And the curves of the legs gave my clients the traditional style they like.” The beaded cabinet profiles are traditional too. Also nodding to tradition are the Carrara marble countertops. The mirrored medicine cabinets have integrated LED lights. The homeowners can change the lights’ color and brightness.
black-and-white basketweave floor tile. This tile also suited the traditional style of the house. From there, she carefully balanced the black within the color scheme, including on the bathtub, tub faucet, cabinet hardware and shower enclosure frame.
Wall paint: Pure White, Sherwin-Williams
Slack chose a large-format porcelain tile with a subtle pattern for the shower stall. “Using a larger tile meant fewer grout lines,” she says. “And the grout is mold-resistant, making it easier to keep clean.”
Mixing warm and cool tones was another careful balance. The walnut provides lots of warmth against the cooler white tones. The gray tiles in the room have both warm and cool undertones. “I used Reserved White by Sherwin-Williams on the walls,” Slack says. “It’s not crisp, it’s not warm, it’s not peachy or beige — it’s just right.”

In this McClean, Virginia, bathroom uploaded by Cunningham / Quill Architects, a pale aqua variegated wall tile, a light basket-weave-pattern floor tile and a complementary marbled vanity top offer just enough color and pattern to keep the eye engaged. Other subtle but impactful details are frosted lower window panes, sleek silver hardware, a half tub enclosure made of glass and a reeded front on a white vanity, all of which modernize the room’s more traditional elements.
