Working with what was already there, the style we were going for in the back garden was "gothic decrepit." There's a garden in the movie Bram Stoker's Dracula that was the inspiration. This photo is not quite decrepit but it has the darker, looming quality. Dark corners and shadows, that can be illuminated by lamp light.
Another photo that shows the flanking window seat... Looking at this, I feel like some divided lights (painted dark or stained) would fit better with the rest of the house. We'd love a fireplace too, if that could be managed. It'd have to be gas because I'd be too scared to light a real wood-burning one with all of the trees around.
I love pretty much every photo in this Houzz "Garden House" project, although not all apply. Overall, I love the connection to the garden esp. here with the windows and the thoughtful steps.

Including this as a note that we have our security doors everywhere because we're super conscious of security but also all of our cats are indoor only and it's great to have a buffer so they don't get out.

Love the idea of windows that wrap around corners. Divided lights are wonderful but we're also open to more full panes if they don't change the vibe too much. Need to think about birds too.
Love the dark trim on these windows, to draw your eye outside. Relaxed, peaceful vibe.

Filtered light, greenery all around
A few things about this photo: 1. The lattice in the gable. It's tighter than we've talked bout in the past and it looks great painted that trim color... 2. Some dentil detail might be interesting. Not sure how easy it would be to add to the steel beam we have and whether it'd be worth it. 3. Thinking of exterior colors here. We'd go for blue (maybe faded gray blue that's a bit darker or a pale blue) with potentially a burgundy roof, as we need to replace the existing roof so have the opportunity to change the color. In this photo, I like the burgundy frames and the cream trim. With blue it would be gorgeous. Maybe burgundy would show the leaves too much because the pitches aren't steep enough for them to fall off. Considerations... 4. We like pre-weathered galvalume but that's a premium color and it's already going to be expensive so we need to find a standard that we're happy with. Zinc Grey should do it.
Q
