Another idea is to have the wall units the same colour as the work surface using contrasting colours and textures, it moves the eye around the room.

Oh dear! I know this is an extreme example of bringing in different colours but it shows how it brake up that 'boxy' look. It's really common now to use two colours or more for units. You can be far more subtle using crisp whites, creams and shades of beige giving a more monochromatic look and feeling far more peaceful.

The shelves and glass wall units work nicely. This picture is also good as an example of bringing in a contrasting colour. The colour is evenly spread, this creates a nice balance of colour.

These are nice large bins, we have small bins and find we have to empty them every other day. Ours have the lids on them and when you open the cupboard the lids automatically lift up, it does keep the smalls at bay!

If an island was something you were thinking about, task lighting in the form of pendant lighting is great, again, this is something you can play with using contrasting colours and textures.

Plants either side of the window will frame a lovely view of the garden. If you use a contrasting colour or a texture you can use the pots for this.
