The walls in the bedroom have been treated with nine coats of lacquer for a glossy, luxurious look. “The walls are extremely shiny,” says Thott. “You have to first banish all thoughts of Italian kitchens of the 1990s, and then just see how well this works. It bounces light off the floor and looks like water. It’s not easy or inexpensive to achieve this effect,” she adds, “but this is a really small room and in a little space you can do this kind of thing. It adds the wow factor.”
White out According to Crawshaw, white is the new black … when it comes to bathroom fittings, that is. Unlike sleek, moody black fixtures, white tapware, accessories and other fittings will add a fresh, contemporary vibe to any bath zone. Use them in an all-white scheme to complete the clean, pared-back look, or set them against a bold coloured splashback or tiled backdrop to create a striking space that’s fun and oozes flair.
Apart from the romantic ambience they create, a bathroom skylight is the most economical way of allowing natural light to flood the room. DESIGN TIP: A ventilated skylight above a shower is aesthetically pleasing, but also necessary to allow steam to escape. It’s also a much cheaper option than a buzzing bathroom extractor fan.

a simple solution, such as a two-way mirror with an extendable arm that can be tucked away when not in use. There’s a lot to be said for a modest, uncomplicated wash station. It has a simple, austere aesthetic of its own, discourages clutter and, best of all, cuts down on cleaning.

An airy vanity can also include a towel shelf (also usable for baskets of smaller items) and still feel very light. Again, white, metal and glass will help it appear to float. A front rail will provide a place for a small towel.
Polished metal, glass, mirror and Lucite are great materials for adding interest and drama without absorbing light. The space will feel uniform, even if there’s very little colour.
The little things Sometimes small details can make the look of a shower, especially when you start with a classic plain white tile.
Top to bottom Using a flooring material to wrap the shower walls is a classic luxe look, but what gives this shower an extra spin is the repeated flooring material overhead, so the stall is clad floor to ceiling.
New angles Sometimes all you need to give a shower a dramatic look is a new angle on the tile –specifically, a tile cut at an unusual angle (instead of the more typical 90 degrees). Use a contrasting grout to highlight the quirky shape and add to the veined look of a natural stone.
1. Vertical stripes Instead of adding a horizontal border, consider a vertical accent stripe to visually highlight the height of your shower while adding an unexpected bit of drama. It’s especially effective here in a chevron tile, creating an arrow-like pattern that draws the eye up and creates a sense of dynamic energy. Both tiles are relative neutrals, keeping the look interesting but not overwhelming.

Use a wall-mounted tap Mounting a tap on the wall allows for a narrower sink or vanity, which in turn frees up square footage in the total bathroom. Don’t be afraid to try a wall-mounted tap in traditional design. It works anywhere!
Select a vanity with one shelf Pedestal design has gotten smarter. Even a pedestal style with one shelf can hold towels or a basket for toilet paper.

Ditch the towel rails When planning our bathrooms, instead of picking out towel rails, we opted for hooks. The children hang their towels up on their own, and I never have to fuss with refolding or adjusting.
Distress to impress If you’re partial to the patina of well-worn boards and can’t wait for them to acquire a few scuffs and scrapes, you could experiment with achieving a distressed finish. You can try similar techniques to those used to distress furniture, including applying wax in some areas to prevent paint adhering, or adding several layers of paint and scraping off sections to reveal contrasting colours beneath. I’d recommend trials on spare boards or scrap timber to see which finishes you prefer. There are various workshops around the country teaching techniques for using paint and wax in this way.

Geometric designs can work wonders in any room – they can trick the eye into height, width, depth and everything in between.
Small bathrooms can benefit from feature floors, too. A patterned tile adds style without overwhelming the space, whereas it could if the tiles were used on the walls. A traditional tile pattern paired with more contemporary elements can be an irresistible combination. Can you imagine this bathroom with white or plain floor tiles instead?

Find a flexible friend A tray table can provide useful, versatile storage in a bathroom to keep everyday items close at hand, and is easy to fold up or move when not required. This can work particularly well when guests are staying over, offering them a temporary surface on which to place their own toiletries.

Think outside the square Fitting the vanity into a corner like this may not be conventional, but sometimes that’s exactly what a small bathroom requires for it to really work.
