POD To convert an existing garden shed into a relaxing retreat, consider painting the walls a light, inviting color and adding a skylight. Allowing sunlight to illuminate the space during the day and welcome stargazing by night, skylights can be relatively inexpensive to install and offer big rewards.
Warm metal accents are another way to add some zing to a black island. Polished metals especially will add a nice sparkling element to the room. And, speaking of sparkle, it’s also important to consider your options for the finish sheen. A glossy black finish, as on this island, will reflect light, whereas a matte black finish will absorb light, making the island feel heavier and denser.

The curvy headboards recall the carved walls throughout the house. All details, including the paintings, reflect the luxurious traditional style of the Venetian aristocracy, translated for a mountain location. Bottega d’Arte projects begin on the computer. After a laser scan of the entire space, the house is virtually reconstructed via a 3-D simulation, and the furnishings take shape. No project can begin without an accurate rendering and the creation of a database of pieces that are digitally cataloged, created by hand and assembled on-site. This procedure keeps the phases of the project under control, ensures that errors are avoided and keeps the cost of the work in check.
The living room receives light from a window and the decorative panel in the ceiling. Light blue velvet curtains provide privacy and avoid any hint of minimalistic empty space. “We were born among planers and chisels, breathing the scent of wood, in a small village surrounded by the beautiful valleys of the Dolomites,” says Gianpaolo Zandegiacomo, who with his brother Davide owns Bottega d’Arte, a company specializing in the production of wooden interiors and hand-carved furniture.
“Despite having large windows, the property lacked light, particularly in the hallway,” Lee says. “We removed walls between the hall and living area, kitchen and dining room and replaced them with [glass] screens to allow the rooms to be flooded with light.”

Stand in for a wall. We saw above how sheers can create movable walls to divide a large space. Here, they’re hung to form a fluid partition that allows the bed to be placed in a position that may not otherwise make sense: smack in the center of the room.
Double up. Two layers of sheers grace these arched windows to create an ethereal cloister with a meditative quality. Although you may not think to use sheers alone in your large common areas, they can offer a surprising level of privacy when fabricated to be extra full. Two layers of full sheers will nearly obscure the activities of those inside (though, naturally, silhouettes will still be seen at night when the room is brightly lit). Designer tip: “Fullness” refers to the amount of fabric used to cover a given stretch of window. I recommend “three times fullness” for sheers. Layer under drapes. Sheers are at their most versatile when paired with fully lined treatments. Together, they offer more privacy and light control than each layer can individually. A common way to achieve this flexibility is by mounting sheers underneath another drapery. Designer tip: To hang two treatments on top of each other, have the sheer layer made with standard 3½-inch returns and the heavier layer made with at least 5½-inch returns to ensure that both can move independently without any friction. Leave room to grow. Ideally, every bookshelf in the house should have a little room on it. Otherwise, where will your new books go? Painting the backs of your bookcase in vibrant hues, as shown here, is one creative way to stay motivated to keep some open space on those shelves.
