A white board and batten exterior and a wraparound porch set the stage for this house overlooking a lake. In the kitchen, designer Michelle Fries painted the cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s Silvery Blue. A red Bertazzoni range also pops with color, while texture comes from bamboo Roman shades. A butcher-block countertop island and Carrara marble countertops on the perimeter provide rustic-meets-classic balance.
A remodeled Nebraska barn now a weekend retreat. Architect Michelle Penn helped two brothers make an energy-efficient weekend country home inspired by a historic barn that was part of the family farm where they grew up, outside Lincoln, Nebraska. The construction incorporated passive-house technologies and, since there was no public water supply available, they decided to recycle greywater and harvest rainwater, following recommendations from Lincoln-Lancaster County’s Comprehensive Plan for the City and County.

When a family of four living in the U.S. Virgin Islands asked their architect to build them a compact new home, there was a catch — it had to be 20 feet underground. Taking a minimalist approach, Robeson Design opted for sliding doors and custom-designed furniture that could be extended or retracted to create convertible living spaces. The homeowners also have the flexibility of being on or off the grid, with traditional electricity and battery-operated generators as well as solar-powered panels. This family is prepared for anything!

6. Use every scrap of space. This small double bedroom is full of tricky angles and slopes, but that hasn’t stood in the way of storage. Mini shelves, hanging rails, bookcases and racks have been cut to fit the available space. It means that a great deal of storage has been squeezed into a compact area.
While the overhang provides some of the protection they were seeking, Mempa’s future plans include adding a small three-sided covered building nearby in the garden for cool-down sessions between sauna rounds, a part of the traditional Finnish process.
Their “aha” moment came when Skip found a photo on Houzz showing a steam shower leading into a sauna room. “That was when we knew we could make it work,” he says. Now they weave the steam shower into the traditional Finnish sauna ritual by using it to warm up before stepping into the sauna and then finishing with a cool shower.

4. Better organization. When the storage and utility spaces in your home are efficiently designed and well organized, life is easier. Having trouble getting everyone out the door in the morning? Perhaps a super functional mudroom would help. Can’t find anything to wear? A smart closet system (especially when paired with some serious decluttering) could do the trick.
