Mix deep and standard upper cabinets. If you have some vertical space to work with, build your cabinets all the way up to the ceiling with a mix of standard 12- to 16-inch uppers above the counter and counter-depth uppers above those. This gives you breathing room around eye and elbow height, with some extra depth to stash large items or seasonal pieces. Just be sure to also include a step ladder tucked away nearby so you can get items down safely from the highest cabinets.
Because the main wall was so large, everything else needed to take a back seat while not being boring,” Sims says. “If we did too much other color, it could look elementary, and if [it was] too busy, your eye would not know where to go. We used our punch in the tile and let everything else be softer but intentional.

When you want your backsplash to make a statement. Form and function are both important to a kitchen. After all, if you spend a lot of time in the space, it’ll be more enjoyable if the space is beautiful. A beautiful backsplash makes a strong statement in a kitchen, and raising the upper cabinets gives you a little more square footage to feature a stunning material.
If the people using the kitchen are on the taller side (say 5’10” and above), they’ll see the cabinets from a different angle than the “average” eye line. Raising the upper cabinets a few more inches will ensure an unobstructed view of the counter and give a bit more elbow room for working.
Look to large-format geometrics. Think this tile pattern looks incredibly intricate? In fact, the pattern is simpler than you might guess. If you look closely, you can see that this design is made from repeating one large square tile that is diagonally split into a white half and black half — and a mirror image of the same tile — rotated randomly about the floor. Together they form energetic shapes that seem to have no beginning or end. To create a look like this, shop for large-format tiles with a simple design, and make sure to look at several tiles together to see how the pattern looks repeated. Sometimes the most simple tile design can surprise you.
This idea is a great one to consider for people who want to give cabinets a little update but not a complete overhaul. You can swap out a few drawers or doors and leave the remaining ones as is to get a unique mix. Alternately, if you have wood cabinets and want to freshen up the look without completely removing the wood, consider having some of the door or drawer fronts painted while leaving some wood elements remaining, to get the best of both worlds.
In fact, if you like an eclectic or casually chic look, you can go ahead and use two rugs that are completely different. Try pulling in rugs from other spaces, or making use of a company’s return policy to test out the look of a rug (or two) in your kitchen to see if the look is right for you. You might be surprised at just how different, and more welcoming, your kitchen will look.
2. Create a flexible space. This open-plan living room and kitchen was created from the framework of two separate rooms. The inclusion of tall pocket doors between the two areas lets the space return to its original layout in an instant, with the doors filling in the area where a dividing wall would’ve been. By taking the door frame right to the ceiling and as far out to the sides as possible (doubling up the pocket doors to allow for this), the rooms are almost completely open to each other when the doors are pulled back.
